Reba Harris, founder of The Gilead House and longtime community advocate has passed away. She was 84. Harris had recently retired from her duties as executive director of the organization she founded and was working on writing her second book at the time of her passing.

Harris started The Gilead House in 2000 after being called into service by God to help women facing addiction and attempting recovery after incarceration. From meeting in support groups and counseling wherever space could be found, Harris built the organization, with the help of the community, into a 24-bed recovery shelter with full services to aid participants as they overcome addiction and rebuild their lives.

The Gilead House Board of Directors and staff released a statement shortly after learning of Harris’ passing.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the death of Gilead House founder Reba Harris. Her death occurred following accidental injuries sustained while visiting family in Romania. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family at a later date.

“This is a terrible loss for the Gilead House community, and we will honor Reba’s memory by continuing the work she started here 24 years ago. Reba was an exemplary Christian and a force of nature when advocating for ‘His Daughters.’

“The impact of her work to help women fulfill their potential and overcome difficult life challenges will be felt for generations to come. Reba’s life was well lived in the service of others, and she will always remain a guiding force at Gilead House.”

The Lantern will have additional coverage of Harris’ life and the impact she had on the Kokomo community in coming days.
