Work release inmate arrested for robbery

On Aug. 10 at approximately 3:11 p.m., officers of the Kokomo Police Department were dispatched to Soupley’s, 928 E. Markland Ave., regarding a report of an armed robbery. 

Kokomo/Howard County Dispatch advised that a male entered the store and demanded money and alcohol. He also stated that he had a handgun, however, no weapon was displayed. The suspect fled the store with a bottle of alcohol in a paper bag. The suspect was last seen running eastbound. 

Officers immediately began searching the area. Officer Benjamin Penrod #440 located the suspect approximately one block north of the store. After a brief foot chase and brief physical altercation, the suspect was taken into custody. He was still in possession of the bottle of alcohol. No weapon was found.

The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Tremel Black of Kokomo. Black was positively identified by witnesses at the scene and video surveillance. He was transported to the Howard County Criminal Justice Center and charged with the following:

Robbery (IC: 35-42-5-1, Level 3 Felony)

Resisting Law Enforcement (IC: 35-44.1-3-1, Level 6 Felony)

Escape -Work Release (IC: 35-44.1-3-4, Level 6 Felony)
