Youth group pouring Christ's love into kids needing guidance

(Editor’s note: Following is a column submitted by the Carver Community Center.)

A little over a year ago, Brenda Barnett didn’t just have an idea—she had a vision. While attending her women’s group, she heard other mothers express their desire for a place where their kids could grow and belong. It was in that moment God moved in her heart.

“I immediately thought about my husband and how much I wanted to partner with him, especially for the youth. He works so well with kids,” Brenda recalled. “I prayed and asked God for a venue, and He told me to be specific. I asked for the Carver Center.”

Within a week, God answered in a way only He can. Brenda’s husband received an unexpected phone call from Jeff Issacs, offering him a position at Carver. “I could’ve fallen to my knees,” Brenda said. “God made it clear how quickly and deeply He wanted this plan fulfilled.”

Today, that vision is alive and thriving. Through the ministry Thirst No More, Brenda has built a youth group that’s reaching teens ages 13 to 18, and now, even younger children are part of the program. The group meets at the Carver Community Center every other Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Over the past few gatherings, they’ve experienced steady growth. Young people are coming—not just for food, but for something real. They’re hungry for truth and are being spiritually fed through the Word of God.

Brenda has worked diligently to pour the love and message of Jesus Christ into these young hearts. It’s not easy. Reaching a generation where church isn’t always a priority, and where faith is often absent in the home, comes with its challenges. Still, she presses on, believing in the impact.

“As soon as the youth group started, God showed even more opportunity,” Brenda shared. “By our second meeting, we had older and younger age groups. I truly believe God wants to use every space at Carver to bring these kids together with like-minded peers in a place they’ll want to come back to.”

What’s happening at Carver through Thirst No More is special. The ministry, originally envisioned by Judi Trent, is taking root in the lives of these young people. As parents, we must stop making groups like this optional. We need to get our children there. No hesitation. No negotiation. And parents, you’re welcome to attend with them. In fact, you’re encouraged to.

This may sound like a lighthearted push, but the message is serious. Our children are facing silent battles and pressures we could’ve never imagined. The streets won’t help them. The media won’t heal them. Only Jesus can truly lead and save them.

So, help us. Help leaders like Brenda Barnett. Most of all, help your children by making the introduction.
