Students at Maple Crest Elementary School spent the summer earning their school a trophy. The trophy, presented by the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library, went to the Howard County school that had the highest percentage of students participate in the library’s Summer Reading Program. More than 36 percent of Maple Crest Elementary students participated.

The award was a new feature of this year’s Summer Reading Program. KHCPL polled area schools to find out if they would be interested in the challenge, and the overwhelming response was positive.

In years to come, the library will continue to award the trophy to the school with the highest participation. During a presentation at Maple Crest on Wednesday, students made it clear they intend to earn the trophy again next year.

The library kept track of how many students from each elementary school participated over the summer. Other top contenders included Acacia Academy, South Creek, and Wallace School of Integrated Arts.

The program is open to all ages, and this year more than 3,300 people participated in the Summer Reading Program, which ran from June 6 to July 19. Next year’s program will kick off Friday, June 5, 2026.
