Music, laughter, and the aroma of freshly grilled burgers filled the air along North Union Street recently, and dozens of people gathered to check out what was happening. Coordinated Assistance Ministries (CAM) held an open house to introduce the community to the many programs it offers.

According to CAM executive director Jerome Williams, the organization received a grant from Congregations with Community, and with that funding, CAM decided to reach out and invite people to visit.

“This event really focuses on our programs,” said Williams. “We’re really talking about our programs and what we’re bringing to the community. This open house is kind of just to highlight that.”

Visitors were encouraged to tour the facility at 625 N. Union St., and as they walked through, they were met by several informational stations, staffed by businesses and service providers that traditionally partner with CAM to improve the lives of its clients.

“We have Financial Center here,” said Williams. “Food Finders is here. Mariah, who does our Biblical life skills classes, is here. It’s great!”

CAM also had plenty of toiletries and other items on hand that had been donated for use by clients. And Barlow’s Barber Shop set up a chair and provided free haircuts.

Outside, The Coterie served up its signature smashburgers while Hometown Ice Create offered frozen treats. The entire affair quickly took on the feel of a neighborhood block party, which was the intent, Williams explained.

“It really does take a village to support the people of Howard County, and CAM is a part of that,” said Williams. “I encourage people to come see us. We have a lot of programs here for the entire community.”

CAM long has stood as an advocate for the homeless and the financial insecure. Through day services, transportation, temporary shelter, financial guidance, and resources of clothing and basic life necessities, the organization provides hope and the opportunity for its clients to improve their lives.
