Spooktacular Story Time

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office will hold its third annual Trunk-or-Treat on Mon., Oct. 27, from 5-7 p.m. The event will take place in the parking lot of the Howard County Criminal Justice Center, 1800 W. Markland Ave.

Growing Indoor Plants
Visit the Kokomo Howard County Public Library’s Russiaville branch, 315 Mesa Dr., on Tue., Oct. 28, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. to learn how to keep indoor plants healthy and happy. This event is presented by the Purdue Extension Office.
Red Ribbon Christmas Boxes
Apply for a Red Ribbon Christmas Box from Oct. 27 through Nov. 6. This income-qualified program provides a box filled with gifts for every member of a household, as well as paper products, hygiene items, and a grocery gift card. Applications will be accepted in Howard County at Grace United Methodist Church, 219 W. Mulberry St., from Oct. 27-31, in Cass County at Emmaus Mission, 805 Spencer St., Logansport, on Nov. 4, and in Miami County at Zion Chapel Church, 915 S. Broadway Ave., Peru, on Nov. 6. Applicants will need to present a current, government-issued photo ID for each adult in the household, Social Security cards, birth certificates, or proof of birthdates for all household members, and proof of household income.

Community Foundation Open House
The Community Foundation Serving Howard, Clinton, and Carroll Counties, 215 W. IUK Women’s Basketball
The Indiana University Kokomo women’s basketball program has officially released their 2025 regular season schedule. This year’s team will open its season with four home games. The Cougars’ home opener is set for Tue., Oct. 28, against the University of St. Francis. Medal of Honor Ceremony
A Medal of Honor ceremony for Simon Harris will be held at Kokomo Memorial Park, located at the corner of North and Ohio Streets, on Thu., Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. The medal is being awarded posthumously to Harris for his valor demonstrated during the Philippine Insurrection of 1899. Speakers will include Rep. Mike Karickhoff and Mayor Tyler Moore.
Silver Birch Trunk-or-Treat
Silver Birch Living Kokomo, 408 S. Washington St., will hold its annual Trunk or Treat event on Thu., Oct. 30, from 4:30-6 p.m. The public is invited to show its Halloween spirit and join Silver Birch for an evening of Fall fun. Costumes are encouraged but not required.
Center Twp. Trunk or Treat
The Center Township Trustee’s Office will hold its annual Trunk or Treat on Thu., Oct. 30, from 5-7 p.m. The event will take place at the township office, 213 E. Jefferson St. There will be free snacks and beverages, a touch a fire truck station, candy, music, and prizes. The event is sponsored by Meijer.
Costume Design
Are you interested in learning more about costume design when making videos? This class is for you! Join the Kokomo Filmmakers group to help grow a local network of movie-making professionals. Trick-or-Treat Hours
The City of Kokomo has announced that Trick-or-Treat hours for Halloween 2025 will be Fri., Oct. 31, from 5-9 p.m. Residents are asked to limit their children to these hours within the city limits. Homeowners participating in Trick-or-Treat should leave their porch lights on or turn them off if they have run out of treats or are not participating. Trick-or-Treaters are encouraged to use flashlights and wear reflective clothing and to remain in well-lit areas familiar to them. Participants and drivers are asked to use caution, as children may run into the street rather than using crosswalks or crossing at street corners, which is strongly recommended.

Leaf Pick-Up
The City of Kokomo will begin leaf collection on Mon., Nov. 3. Crews will start on the south side of the city and work north until all leaves are collected or weather no longer permits collection. Each residence should expect two to four collections, depending on how quickly the leaves fall. Rake loose leaves to the curb. Do not place them in the street. Keep piles away from mailboxes, fences, water meter access plates, and other structures that could be damaged during collection. Do not mix leaves with trash, limbs, or other yard waste. Bagged leaves weighing less than 50 pounds may be placed with regular trash for pick-up. Limb collection will be suspended during this collection window. Residents are encouraged to take limbs to the Greencycle Yard Waste Center, 1120 S. Dixon Road at no charge to city and county residents. For additional information, call 765-453-4030.

Smoke Alarms for Indian Heights
CrisisReady Howard County is looking for volunteer to assist in providing free smoke alarms to the residents of the Indian Heights subdivision. The Community Howard Regional Health Foundation will present its 8th annual Chef’s Bash on Sat., Nov. 8. Enjoy samplings of beer, bourbon, and bubbles, along with live music from The Time Travelers, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo Region’s Hingst Hall, 1815 E. Hoosier Artists: A Gift
The IUK Art Gallery, 2300 S. Washington St., will host an exhibition featuring a collection of works from OneAmerica through Nov. 8. Over the years, OneAmerica grew its art collection, from oil paintings to watercolors. They’ve collaborated with IUK Art Gallery in putting together a show that shows the talent of Indiana. The Gallery is open to the public and offers free admission.
Spelling Bee Explosion
Carver Community Center and Gentlemen & Scholars Inc., will present a Spelling Bee Explosion on Sun., Nov. 9, at 3 p.m. The event will take place at the Carver Center, 1013 N. Howard County Special Olympics will hold a Fire Truck Pull on Sun., Nov. 23, in the Family Farm and Home parking lot in the Walmart Plaza. The first pull begins at 2 p.m., and you can test your strength! Create a team of up to 10 people to see who can pull a fire truck 50 feet the fastest. The cost is $40 per person. The Kokomo Family YMCA will hold its annual Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving morning, Thu., Nov. 27. Join them to work off the holiday calories while racing or strolling through downtown. This timed race offers every participant a t-shirt and a medal if registration is completed by Nov. 10. Murder Mystery
The Kokomo Howard County Public Library will host a murder mystery dinner inspired by titles from the top 15 list novels selected for this year’s Howard County Reads program. This year’s play, titled “Becoming Madam Murder,” will take place at Elite Event Center, 2820 S. Lafountain St., on Fri., Nov. 14. Tickets are on sale for $50 each or $450 for a table of 10.
Walk with a Doc
This free community walking program takes place on the second Saturday of each month, led by a local healthcare provider, and is open to people of all ages and abilities. The next walk takes place Sat., Nov. 15, at 9 a.m. on the campus of Indiana University Kokomo, 2300 S. Washington St. The program allows participants to safely take a walk, learn about current health topics, and meet new people. Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group
Alzheimer’s Association support groups, conducted by trained facilitators, are a safe place for people living with dementia and their care partners to develop a support system, exchange practical information on challenges and possible solutions, talk through issues and ways of coping, share insight, and learn about community resources. Cowboy Church
On the third Saturday of each month, Fairview Baptist Church holds Cowboy Church. It’s a combination of Southern Gospel, Bluegrass, Hymns and a lot of serious goofing off. Youth Symphony
If your child has ever air-conducted an orchestra with a pencil, played air violin to movie soundtracks, or just loves music, the Kokomo Symphony Youth Programs are calling. The programs are an inexpensive way to teach violin, cello, or bass locally. A second semester of classes will take place from Jan. 4-May 3, 2026. Beginning Strings classes for children in third grade or higher and with fewer than two years of experience will run from 4-5:15 p.m. Intermediate Strings classes for children with two to four years of experience will run from 5:15-6 p.m. The classes are designed for children to advance to the Kokomo Symphony Youth Orchestra.
