The Nu Mu Nu chapter of the Omega Psi Phi fraternal organization will hold a pancake breakfast for the veterans staying at Jackson Street Commons on Sat., Dec. 13. The chapter is known for its charitable work in the local community, and serving these veterans who are seeking refuge from the possibility of homelessness is another way the organization seeks to serve.
Omega Psi Phi is the first international fraternal organization founded on the campus of an historically black college. Chartered in 1911, the organization boasts of having more than 700 chapters worldwide. The guiding principles of the fraternity are manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplifting.
Nu Mu Nu, a graduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi, was established in 2016 and is comprised of men from the Kokomo and Noblesville areas.
Jackson Street Commons is a shelter designed to cater to the needs of veterans facing homelessness. Maintained and operated by the Family Service Association of Howard County, the permanent, supportive housing facility has been in operation since 2014.
The project was made possible through a partnership between the City of Kokomo, the Howard County Board of Commissioners, the Center Township Trustee’s Office, Ascension St. Vincent, VFW Post 1152 and numerous local businesses and individuals.
