To say that the Northwestern Lady Tigers varsity basketball team is having a rough year is an understatement. Its only win of the season came just after Christmas at Logansport, but on Jan. 3, the Kokomo Lady Wildkats weren’t interested in wishing their county rivals a happy new year.

Instead, Kokomo laid into Northwestern early, then let the bench get playing time en route to a 66-27 drubbing.

The outcome of the game was never in doubt, as the Lady Kats built a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and led 33-12 at the half. The second half brought more misery to Northwestern, as they could pull no closer.

The entire Lady Kats squad got playing time over the course of the evening, which resulted in some modest statistical numbers for the starters. Freshman Camryn Tucker led all scorers with 15 points in just 10 minutes of play, followed by junior Satyra Scott and sophomore Jhordyn Brown with 11 points each.

Tucker, a long-range specialist, hit five of six shots from beyond the arc to achieve her point totals. Freshman Taniyah Jones also dropped bombs on the Lady Tigers, going 3-3 from three-point land.

Akiera Huntsman and Scott managed five rebounds each, and senior Amara Stroman led Kokomo with six assists. In a remarkable performance defensively, the Lady Wildkats stole the ball an eye-popping 27 times. Senior Eliana Stewart led the pickpocketing with seven steals.

On the Northwestern side of the ledger, senior Maci Rody and junior Ava Schultz each managed six points. Junior Tessa Davenport led the Lady Tigers with nine rebounds. Freshman Aliana Dubbels had three assists.

The misery continued for Northwestern after this loss, as the 1-15 Lady Tigers dropped contests against Benton Central, Whitko, and Oak Hill. They next travel to Northfield (12-5) on Jan. 17.

Kokomo (9-10) followed up the win with a victory against Harrison in overtime on Jan. 13. They next host Tipton (6-11) on Jan. 20.
