The Kokomo Rescue Mission will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its annual Walk a Mile in My Shoes fundraiser on Saturday, February 28, inviting the community to walk in support of women and children staying in its shelters.
The one-mile walk will begin with a kickoff ceremony at 8:30 a.m. and will include a hot breakfast (freewill offering), tours of the Mission’s two women’s shelters — Watered Garden and Open Arms -- and opportunities to hear powerful stories from women whose lives have been impacted by the Mission’s programs.
Participants may register as individuals, form teams, or support the event through donations. Online registration and giving are available at charity.pledgeit.org/KRMWALK. Registration and donations are also accepted in person at the Kokomo Rescue Mission, 321 W. Mulberry St., Kokomo (door #4), Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Walk a Mile in My Shoes fundraiser began 25 years ago as a way to help the community better understand the reality many homeless women face. The event’s name reflects the fact that many women seeking help from the Kokomo Rescue Mission once had to walk to the shelter to ask for assistance. At the very first Walk, more than 400 men, women, and children participated, raising approximately $30,000 to support the newly opened Open Arms Shelter.
Today, the Walk continues to raise crucial funds that support safe shelter, a multitude of programs, and hope for women and children experiencing homelessness in the community.
