On March 24, 2026, at approximately 12:03 p.m., Howard County 911 Dispatch received a call reporting a person had been shot in the 1400 block of North 250 East in Kokomo.

The first deputy arrived on scene within six minutes and located an adult victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Deputies immediately rendered aid, applying a tourniquet to control bleeding until medical personnel arrived. The victim was transported from the scene by ambulance and subsequently airlifted to an area hospital for further treatment.

Initial information indicated that the shooting involved the homeowner, described as an elderly individual believed to be suffering from dementia. Sheriff’s Office negotiators responded to the scene and were able to successfully communicate with the individual, ultimately convincing him to exit the residence peacefully. The suspect was taken into custody at approximately 12:26 p.m. without further incident.

This incident appears to be isolated in nature. At no point was there an ongoing threat to the general public, and there is no danger to the community related to this incident. This investigation remains ongoing, and a continued law enforcement presence will remain in the area as the scene is processed.

The case remains active and under investigation by Detective Scott Waymire (#34-63). Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact him directly at 765-614-3463, or by submitting a tip through the Sheriff’s Office mobile app or at www.sheriff.howardcountyin.gov.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by medics from St. Vincent Health, the Greentown Volunteer Fire Department, and the Howard County Emergency Management Agency.
