It’s storm season in Indiana, which runs from March to June. Duke Energy Indiana’s investments in advanced “self-healing” technology will make a difference in keeping the lights on for customers.
What is self-healing technology? It’s advanced technology that works like the GPS in a car. It automatically detects power outages and quickly reroutes power to restore service faster or even avoid the outage altogether. It can help to reduce the number of customers affected by an outage by as much as 75 percent and can often restore power in less than a minute.
In 2025 alone, self-healing technology helped avoid 100,000 outages for Indiana customers, saving around 350,000 hours of total outage time. Around 45 percent of Duke Energy Indiana customers currently benefit from self-healing technology. That’s nearly four times the number of customers served by this innovative technology in 2022.
“Duke Energy will continue to expand self-healing technology in Indiana this year, helping deliver smarter, stronger and more resilient power on both ‘blue-sky days’ and during severe weather,” said Stan Pinegar, president, Duke Energy Indiana. “For our customers, that means fewer outages, faster restoration and a more reliable experience year-round.”
Duke Energy Indiana, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, owns 6,800 megawatts of energy capacity, supplying electricity to 930,000 customers in a 23,000-square-mile service area, making it Indiana’s largest electric supplier.
