The Lady Tigers of Northwestern are enjoying a remarkable regular season on the soccer pitch. Sitting at 13-3-1 and riding an eight-game winning streak, their visit to Greentown on Oct. 3 amounted to another notch on their belts.
The Tigers put up scoring numbers more likely to be seen in softball, as they dispatched their cross-county rivals, 8-0, behind an amazing four-goal performance by senior Abigail Keeney. That output matched her season high, which she first set against Peru on Sept. 24.
Kenney now has 33 goals on the season and has scored in all 17 contests Northwestern has competed in this year. That output has her ranked 15th in the state for scoring and 61st nationally.
Kenney wasn’t alone on the field, however. Northwestern also got goals from freshman Parker Johnson, sophomore Margaret Van Osdell, and juniors Kendra Hughes and Izabella Arrick.
Assists in scoring came from freshman Nadia Rockey and sophomore Brooklynn Conwell with two each, and one assist from juniors Arrick and Makinly Yoder.
Northwestern took 41 shots at the goal, which meant that Eastern tender junior Brooke Robinson had her hands full. She made 14 saves. As the game wore on, Eastern subbed in for Robinson. Junior Claire Rush spelled Robinson and made nine saves, and sophomore Maeli Petty was given time at the net, where she made two saves.
On the Northwestern side of the pitch, freshman Jordyn Wolf and junior Addison Bumgardner each made a save.
After downing Eastern to end the regular season, the Tigers opened sectional play against Peru on Oct. 7 and won 7-0, then faced sectional host Maconaquah and delivered a 6-1 beatdown.
Northwestern has been nearly unstoppable since stumbling out of the gate against West Lafayette and Sheridan to start the season. Since Aug. 23, the Lady Tigers have gone 13-2, allowing a total of 11 goals while scoring 80 goals.
They play Oak Hill this evening, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. for the sectional championship. The Eagles (16-0-1) are one of just three teams to put a loss on the Lady Tigers this year.
Eastern’s season concluded in the second round of their sectional, where their run was ended by Taylor. The Titans will face Lapel at Lapel for the sectional championship tonight, Oct. 11.
