Bodies were flying at Western High School on Dec. 13 as it hosted the Western Wrestling Invitational. Attracting many of the top teams in the region, the meet provided a glimpse into what the postseason will offer. And if the results are any indication, local area schools have a chance to go deep in the state tournament.
The invitational was won by Oak Hill, but Kokomo placed second in the tournament while host school Western finished third. Tipton and Eastern were sixth and seventh, respectively.
Kokomo featured three champions on its roster. Dorian Barbour was successful at 106 lbs. as he scored the pin over Marion’s Ben Bevans in 3:33. Josh Sawyer-May also won at 113 lbs. over Zane Pemberton of Tipton by medical forfeit. And David Nieto took a 5-1 decision over Western’s Jacob Scott.
“We had great performances by Dorian Barbour, Josh Sawyer-May and Joelle Nieto,” said Kokomo wrestling head coach Jacob Bough. “Devon Rush lost in the finals to a tough Tipton kid (William Wolford) who has been to my summer camp the past two years.
“We are still battling injuries and hopefully can get it together before Sectionals. This tournament was a good preface to Sectionals.”
Western had a single champion at 144 lbs. as Erik Hunt dispatched Corbin Goshert of Wabash with a 10-0 major decision.
Tipton had a pair of champions. At 175 lbs., Wolford pinned Rush of Kokomo in just 31 seconds. And Brayden Hight won at 215 lbs. with a pin of Erick Krogstie of Eastern at 5:50.
Eastern had a winner at 138 lbs. as Triston Elmore prevailed over Jackson Davis of Western by registering a technical fall, 19-2, at the 5:20 mark.
Western’s Hayden Dillinger made it to the final match at 285 lbs., and Brock Turner of Tipton wrestled in the final at 190 lbs. Owen Tolle of Eastern fell in the championship round at 150 lbs., as did Western’s Brady Shannon at 132 lbs. and Keegan Tedder at 126 lbs.
Following are the final scores for the meet:
- Oak Hill 224
- Kokomo 202
- Western 168
- Wabash 155
- Marion 152.5
- Tipton 152
- Eastern 124.5
