Youth Summit brings positive message to IU Kokomo

On Sat., Aug. 9, the Omicron Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. brought together nearly 50 youth and adults for its 2025 Youth Summit: “Your Voice, Your Power,” held at Indiana University Kokomo. The summit aimed to empower young people through mental health awareness, leadership development, and the encouragement of authentic self-expression.

The day opened with an atmosphere of enthusiasm and expectation as participants prepared to engage in a variety of interactive sessions. Students took part in hands-on workshops that addressed the importance of mental wellness, offering both practical tools and personal reflection opportunities. Guided discussions provided safe spaces for young voices to be heard, while activities encouraged openness, resilience, and positive self-identity.

Parents and guardians were not left out of the conversation. A dedicated parent workshop focused on mental health resources and effective strategies to support the emotional well-being of their children. This segment equipped families with knowledge and connections to help strengthen the home environment.

One of the day’s most memorable moments came during the Couch Conversations segment, an unfiltered, heartfelt panel discussion where youth spoke candidly about their challenges, dreams, and the ways they find strength. The honesty and vulnerability shared on stage created a ripple of understanding and unity that resonated throughout the audience.

Breakout sessions also sparked deep engagement. A facilitator from the Trust Circles workshop reflected on the experience, stating, “I was completely blown away by the students’ transparency and engagement … so much so that I look forward to participating in the summit next year.” Such feedback highlighted the summit’s ability to foster genuine connection and personal growth.

In addition to the educational components, the event hosted a vibrant community fair. Local organizations, including the Carver Center, Indiana Black Expo, and Indiana University Kokomo Financial Aid, offered resources and opportunities, reinforcing the summit’s commitment to linking participants with long-term support systems.

By the close of the day, it was clear the Youth Summit had succeeded in its mission: to inspire confidence, encourage dialogue, and remind attendees, both young people and their parents, that the tools for mental, emotional, and academic success are within reach.

The Omicron Phi Omega Chapter extends special thanks to the event organizers: Brionna Cole (Chair), Cynthia Moore Hendricks (Co-Chair), Lisa Weaver, Seant’a Conyers, Dynasty White, Chasidi Bell, Taylor Burns, and April Evans, whose dedication made this impactful day possible.
