My pastor often reminds us to meditate on the Word of God. That simple instruction has become one of the most meaningful spiritual practices in my life. One verse I return to again and again is Psalm 23:6, especially the closing promise: “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Those words have become more than something I read, they have become something I carry.

Reading Scripture and meditating on Scripture are not the same. Reading is essential, and every believer should make it a daily habit. Meditation, however, is taking God’s Word into your heart and mind through focused reflection. It is chewing on every word, quietly repeating it, speaking it aloud, and allowing its truth to become part of who you are. Over time, those verses become available to you exactly when you need them most.

Like many people, I cannot always quote every verse perfectly at a moment’s notice. Yet through meditation, God’s promises remain close. They surface during difficult days, offering peace, direction, and hope when I need them.

During the COVID pandemic, I wrestled with seasons of anxiety. Around that time, I discovered an old Southern preacher whose message centered on Psalm 23:6. I listened to that sermon every day for nearly two years. Even now, I still return to it because its words have been etched into my heart.

One section especially stays with me:

“I’ll dwell in the house of the Lord forever. I didn’t say I’ll camp, or tent, or tabernacle. I said I’ll DWELL in the house of the Lord forever. I’ll dwell in a land where we’ll never grow old. I’ll dwell out there where the silence of eternity is interpreted by love. I’ll dwell in the sun kissed regions of an uncloudy day; dwell in a city whose builder and maker is God. DWELL in the house of the Lord forever. Jesus Christ is Lord.”

Every time I think about those words, I find myself saying them out loud. As believers, we know the Holy Spirit dwells within us, and our bodies are His temple. We belong to Christ, purchased by His sacrifice on the cross. Yet the promise of one day dwelling forever in His glorious presence fills my heart with overwhelming hope. I think about seeing loved ones again and living forever in the radiant light of our Savior.

That hope is not only for eternity. It begins today. Trust in the Lord. Meditate on His Word. Dwell in Him and let His presence dwell richly in you.
