A letter to the editor from Operation Blue Horizon
We know the climate in this country is incredibly intense right now. A lot of people are feeling overwhelmed, angry, scared, or exhausted, especially as we continue to see harm, fear, and trauma tied to ICE and other systems of power.
We want our community to know that Operation Blue Horizon is here for you. We see you. We care about you. And we are committed to showing up in ways that actually protect our people, not just in the moment, but for the long haul.
Right now, that means being intentional about de-escalation, safety, and avoiding situations that could unnecessarily put people in harm’s way. At this time, OBH will not be organizing any protests in the immediate future. That choice is not about disengaging or going quiet. It is about refusing to add fuel to an already volatile moment and making sure our actions do not create more risk, tension, or violence.
That said, there are many real and meaningful ways to take action that do not require being in the street. Change does not only happen at protests. It happens in rooms, on ballots, and through sustained local pressure.
Ways to stay engaged right now include:
- Getting involved locally by becoming a precinct chair or volunteering with the Howard County Democratic Party
- Attending city council, county council, county commissioner, and other local governments meetings to make your voice part of the public record
- Writing letters to editors of local publications or opinion pieces that demand accountability
- Supporting or volunteering for candidates who align with your values, or considering a run for office yourself
- Helping build community power through organizing, education, and mutual care
There are protests and actions happening nearby, and we are happy to help point folks toward those efforts when we can. If you are feeling lost, angry, or unsure where to put your energy, our inbox is open. OBHKokomo@gmail.com, or Operation Blue Horizon on Facebook.
Take care of yourselves. Take care of each other. We will keep doing the work thoughtfully, responsibly, and together.”
