A letter to the editor from the Howard County Tobacco Prevention Coalition
As excitement builds for the upcoming racing season and the Indianapolis 500, it’s important to consider how motorsports can influence more than just entertainment, they can also shape health behaviors.
Recent research shows that tobacco companies are increasingly using motorsports and racing culture to promote newer nicotine products, including nicotine pouches. These promotions can include sponsorships, branding, and on-site marketing experiences that increase visibility among fans, including young people.
Nicotine pouches are often marketed as “tobacco-free” or safer alternatives, but they still contain high levels of nicotine, a highly addictive substance. Products that are discreet, flavored, and easy to use may be especially appealing to youth and young adults. Research also shows that exposure to nicotine product marketing is associated with increased awareness and experimentation.
As Indiana prepares for one of its most iconic events, it’s important to recognize the broader environment surrounding these experiences. Sporting events bring together communities, families, and young fans—and with that comes an opportunity to promote health, not normalize addiction.
