News sources in Chicago are reporting that five men, including three former Kokomo Wildkat stand-out athletes, were arrested Monday evening after a traffic stop in the city’s River North neighborhood. Included in the arrest were Zavion and Zion Bellamy and A’dayveon Young, all a part of Kokomo’s run of success on the basketball court in recent years.
FOX32 Chicago reported on Aug. 19 that the five men were stopped by Cook County sheriff’s deputies. During the stop, officers discovered multiple guns and ammunition, along with 24 grams of a substance believed to be marijuana.
The stop was initiated on belief that the car the five men were riding in had illegally tinted windows. However, the driver of the car sped away from officers, but was eventually stopped in an alley along North LaSalle Boulevard.
After a search of the men and the vehicle, officers discovered:
- Zavion Bellamy, 20, and Adayveon Young, 18, each carried loaded 9 mm handguns with extended magazines;
- Zion Bellamy, 19, and Jermel Rogers, 18, were armed with loaded 9 mm handguns with standard magazines;
- And Trajhan Young, 22, admitted to possession of a .40-caliber handgun with an extended 21-round magazine, which was located under the front passenger seat.
In total, police recovered the guns, 96 rounds of ammunition, and the suspected marijuana.
Because none of the men allegedly had valid firearm owner’s identification cards or concealed carry licenses, they were charged with felonies.
The Bellamy brothers and Adayveon Young attained local fame as part of Kokomo High School’s deep runs through the IHSAA boys’ basketball tournaments in recent years. The young men helped lead the Wildkats to the state finals in 2023.
