She's the grand dame of downtown Kokomo, serving Kokomo for nearly eight decades, and in February the Greater Kokomo Chamber of Commerce recognized Palmer's Jewelry as its Small Business of the Month.

At a small convocation on the sales floor at Palmer's, 101 E. Sycamore St., chamber members converged to celebrate the store's history at the absolute heart of the city on Feb. 18.

Chamber Manager Courtney Butler explained that the Small Business of the Month Award originated in 2024 and was well-received, prompting the program to continue. Sponsored again by Budget Blinds and Today's the Day Coaching and Hypnosis, Butler invited Budget Blinds owner John Fansler to announce the February winner.

"This month we're honoring Palmer's Jewelry," said Fansler. "They've been serving our community since 1946. The Freeds have been serving Kokomo area through community charities and helping employees with both their personal and personal growth for (nearly) 80 years.

"Personal connection has always been a staple at Palmer's, and their goal is simple: to make everyone feel welcome in their store, whether they're spending a small fortune, or if they just stop by to say hi. They hold themselves to a very high standard of service."

Owner Mike Freed stepped up to accept the reward.

"We're so humbled," Freed said. "We have a great team, and we thank you for all the support."

Mayor Tyler Moore was on-hand for the celebration, and he happily added to the accolades for Palmer's with a Community Cornerstone award from the City of Kokomo.

"There's a lot of times that our small businesses feel overlooked and under-appreciated," said Moore. "I've said it before, and I'll continue to say it: small businesses are the foundation of our economy.

"I've been given the opportunity to provide additional recognition, and so because small businesses, and Palmer's specifically, serve as a cornerstone to the downtown community, it's my honor to recognize Mike and company."

Butler wrapped up the event by presenting Freed with his plaque from the Greater Kokomo Chamber of Commerce.

"I just really truly thank you for making downtown vibrant, for wanting to keep our community growing and thriving," said Butler.
