Indiana University will face the University of Illinois on the gridiron on Sept. 20, but the battle won’t be confined to the football field. The two universities have decided to take out their grudges with blood.

Beginning Sat., Sept. 13, the Hurryin’ Hoosiers and the Fighting Illini will compete to raise the most blood donations before the game takes place. The contest is part of a drive undertaken by the Big Ten Conference’s We Give Blood campaign in conjunction with Abbott, a healthcare company.

There is more to the competition than just bragging rights and saving lives. If IU prevails by collecting more blood donations, the donors who gave between Sept. 13-19 will be entered into a drawing for two tickets to the Michigan State vs. Indiana football game on Oct. 18. The tickets will include pregame hospitality, field access, and an Indiana University merchandise package.

Donors must log their donation for IU at www.bigten.org/abbott to be considered for the blood battle champion prize.

The Big Ten’s We Give Blood Drive doesn’t end with this friendly rivalry. The competition continues until Dec. 5, as all of the conference’s member schools strive to raise the most blood donations. Individuals can donate blood anywhere in the U.S. and log their donation for IU.

Anyone who submits their donation for IU at bigten.org/abbott through Dec. 5 will receive an email from Abbott and the Big Ten to redeem a “Hoosiers Give Blood” T-shirt from Homefield Apparel.

For local donors, Indiana University Kokomo is leading the collection effort. The following blood drives are participating locations for the We Give Blood Drive:

Sept. 13: Kokomo Municipal Stadium, 400 S. Union St., from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Sept. 16: Crossroads Community Church, 4254 S, CR 00 EW, from noon until 6 p.m.

Sept.16: Kokomo Family YMCA, 114 N. Union St., from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Sept. 18: Button Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, 1220 E. Boulevard St., from 1 p.m.-6 p.m.
