The Buddy Bags program recently got a big boost from the Kokomo Rotary Club. It donated a trailer so that meals could be delivered to more than 300 kids every week.
The Greater Kokomo Economic Development Alliance honored the partnership is a ceremonial ribbon cutting, which drew out Rotarians and Chamber of Commerce ambassadors alike to celebrate the donation.
“Rotary has been a big part of the Buddy Bags program,” said John Walden, representing the Rotary Club. “As a club, we decided that it might be a good opportunity for us to raise some money and to buy a trailer for the Buddy Bags program.”
The club worked with United Way Serving Howard and Tipton Counties, which operates the Buddy Bags program, to arrange the donation. Rotary members routinely help pack the bags of food for the organization, so purchasing the trailer served as an extension of the group’s community service.
“The whole club participated and had a hand in this experience,” said Walden. “We felt like it’s a great way for the Rotary to help out with Buddy Bags.”
Morgan Quinn, United Way-Howard/Tipton CEO, explained that the Buddy Bags program provides meals to 312 children at six elementary schools across the county. Each week during the school year, the children are sent home with a bag filled with enough food to provide meals for a family across the weekend. The trailer donation made this process easier.
“We relied heavily on the Boy Scouts trailer for several years, as well as just stuffing Buddy Bags in people’s cars to get those to the schools each week,” said Quinn. “We’re super grateful for the Rotary Club here in Kokomo for making this trailer gift happen.
“It is making a huge difference. Having this trailer makes it much more efficient and much safer to to get the food to the kids each week and ensure that they’re taking bags of food home on the weekend. Sometimes, their only meal is the food that they get from the buddy bags program. So, thank you all for your support for the Buddy Bags program and the United Way!”
