Nine charged in Miami Correctional murder

On November 26, 2025, detectives from the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division at the Peru Post initiated an investigation at the request of the Miami Correctional Facility into the death of inmate J. Trinidad Ramirez, 36 years of age.

Investigators were assisted by the Miami County Coroner’s Office and Miami Correctional Facility Investigators. An autopsy was completed to determine the exact cause of death. Charges now have been filed by the Miami County Prosecutor’s Office in connection with the death investigation.

The following individuals have been charged:

  • Na-Son Smith, 33: Murder; Voluntary Manslaughter, a Level 2 Felony; Aggravated Battery, a Level 3 Felony; Prisoner Possessing a Deadly Weapon, a Level 4 Felony; Battery w/ a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony
  • Matthew Shepard, 34: Aggravated Battery, a Level 3 Felony; Prisoner Possessing a Deadly Weapon, a Level 4 Felony; Battery w/ a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony
  • Sherman Thompson, 32: Aggravated Battery, a Level 3 Felony; Prisoner Possessing a Deadly Weapon, a Level 4 Felony
  • Anthony York, 24: Aggravated Battery, a Level 3 Felony; Prisoner Possessing a Deadly Weapon, a Level 4 Felony; Battery w/ a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony
  • Breon Davenport, 27: Aggravated Battery, a Level 3 Felony; Prisoner Possessing a Deadly Weapon, a Level 4 Felony
  • David Holder, 34: Aggravated Battery, a Level 3 Felony; Prisoner Possessing a Deadly Weapon, a Level 4 Felony; Battery w/ a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony
  • Victor Adamson-Scott, 35: Aggravated Battery, a Level 3 Felony; Prisoner Possessing a Deadly Weapon, a Level 4 Felony
  • Aaron Sawyer, 28: Aggravated Battery, a Level 3 Felony; Prisoner Possessing a Deadly Weapon, a Level 4 Felony; Battery w/ a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony
  • Tony Love, 42: Aggravated Battery, a Level 3 Felony; Prisoner Possessing a Deadly Weapon, a Level 4 Felony; Battery w/ a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony

All names mentioned above are currently being housed at the Miami Correctional Facility. All suspects are presumed innocent until/unless proven guilty in court.
