Volunteers needed for United Way Day of Caring, June 25
This article is brought to you by the Kokomo Family YMCA. Our June Splash Bash is heating up - You could win a free month at the Y and a YMCA beach towel! Here’s how it works:
Join the challenge through the free YMCA 360 app. On the main screen, tap “MY CHALLENGES” and then tap “ALL.” Under June Splash Bash, tap “JOIN CHALLENGE.” Then, challenge yourself to swim or water walk for 30 minutes two times a week (two-hour max per day).
Eligible workout types include swimming, water exercise and sports, water walking, or aquatics classes. The target goal is to get 16 hours of these workouts in before June ends. After each water workout, you will manually enter the type and length into your app to populate the leaderboard. Tap “ACTIVITY” on the bottom menu and then tap “WORKOUTS.” Hit the “PLUS SIGN” in the top right corner, fill in the fields, and tap “SAVE.”
We’ll announce the winner at the beginning of July! In the event of a tie, all eligible participants will be entered into a random drawing for the grand prize. Learn more about the challenge here: https://kokomoymca.org/marketing/splashbash/
A little cleaning here. A little gardening there. And a whole lot of helping everywhere. The United Way of Howard and Tipton Counties will hold a Day of Caring on June 25, assisting nonprofits in both communities with small tasks that just need a little elbow grease to accomplish.
According to Lexi Harris, United Way Campaign and Resource Development Coordinator, there is no shortage of tasks, but there is always room for a few more volunteers to help the Day of Caring succeed.
“This is a great opportunity for businesses,” said Harris. “I’ve already had several put together a group of volunteers to be part of the Day of Caring; some of them have three employees helping, some of them 10.”
Harris explained that the goal is to have 100 volunteers ready to work on June 25, from 8-11 a.m. in Kokomo and 1-3 p.m. in Tipton. Currently, United Way has received commitments from 61 volunteers; 44 in Howard County, 17 in Tipton County
“But the deadline to sign up is in two weeks, so I just need help getting the remaining 39 volunteers,” said Harris.
The projects lined up in Howard County include clean-up and beautification at DSI Together with Bona Vista, gardening tasks with Flowers Feed Folks; clean-up at Narrow Gate Horse Ranch, general clean-up work at Kokomo Urban Outreach, and cleaning at the Open Arms women’s shelter. Tipton County projects include helping out at the Boys and Girls Club of Tipton County, ABC and Me, Encore for Seniors, and the Tipton Community School Corp.
United Way received a little help as well as part of the Day of Caring. Harris explained that Corteva Agriscience in Tipton has agreed to outfit the United Way’s Buddy Bags program with stronger, metal folding tables to help with the sorting a packing each week.
Best of all, the volunteers who agree to be part of the Day of Caring don’t need to do anything special other than show up ready to work. All supplies and equipment needed for the projects will be provided.
“Each year, we connect local businesses, groups, community members, and organizations with nonprofit agencies in need of volunteer support for projects that make a real impact in our community,” said Morgan Quinn, CEO, United Way of Howard and Tipton Counties. “From outdoor maintenance, painting, and cleanup projects to meal preparation, creating interactive games for children, and more, there are countless ways to give back and strengthen our community together.”
