Northwestern cannot overcome six-run deficit against the Kings
The Kokomo Downtown Farmers’ Market returns Saturday, May 3! Whether you’re in the market for fresh, locally sourced food, starter plants for your garden, or your next crafting project, there will be something to explore at the market, which opens at 9 a.m. and runs until noon.
The market believes in access to nutritious food for everyone. The market maintains an information booth on site to assist visitors in using their SNAP benefits. The market also offers a “Double Bucks” program for SNAP recipients, which doubles their purchasing power up to $15 for the purchase of healthy foods from the market vendors.
Stop by, say hi, and welcome the farmers’ market back to downtown Kokomo!
The Northwestern Tigers welcomed the Lewis Cass Kings to Howard County for a baseball battle, but the bigger guns belonged to the Kings, as they held off their rivals for a 7-3 road win on April 28.
The Tigers jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but a five-run outburst from the Kings in the fourth settled the matter. They added two more runs in the fifth and then held on as Northwestern tried to battle back, scoring a run in the sixth and in the seventh.
The Tigers were led offensively by Hayden Cook, who went 2-4 and drove in a run. Teegan Helmle added a solo shot to go 1-4, and Landen Begley produced a double. Karson Griggs accounted for the only other Northwestern hit on the evening.
Lewis Cass got great production from Wade Tocco, who smacked a double and a single to drive in three Kings. Owen Cotner-Graves doubled and drove in a run, while Trevor Rowe delivered two hits and drove in three runs. Four other Kings -- Brennan Deeter, Riley Johnson, Bryce Rudd, and Gavin Smith -- singled.
The Kings were led on the mound by Brody Williams who recorded all but two outs made by Northwestern, getting the win for 6 1/3 innings of work. He recorded seven strikeouts.
Northwestern relied on a trio of hurlers to keep things competitive. Griggs lasted the longest on the mound, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing five runs -- four earned -- while fanning three and walking three. He was relieved by Cook, who delivered 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball while striking out three. Ayden Giles pitched one inning, allowing two runs.
The win elevated Lewis Cass to a 7-3 record, but they dropped their next two contests. The Kings host Logansport (9-6) this evening, May 2.
Northwestern's record survived the misstep, leaving the Tigers at 10-4 after a follow-up win against Southwood on April 30. The Tigers invite the Kokomo Wildkats (8-4) to the land of purple and gold this evening, May 2.
