Baseball has a way of reminding you why people fall in love with the game. Sometimes it’s not about who led for eight innings or who had the better statistics. Sometimes it’s about one swing, one moment, and one player who refuses to let the opportunity pass by.
That’s exactly what happened Saturday night as the Kokomo Creek Chubs pulled out a thrilling 7-6 victory over the Terre Haute Rex.
Heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the score was tied 6-6. You could feel the anticipation building around Municipal Stadium. Every pitch mattered. Every fan was on the edge of their seat, knowing one hit could end it all.
Then Big John Curl stepped into the batter’s box.
With the pressure on and the game hanging in the balance, Curl delivered in dramatic fashion. He ripped a ball into center field that looked like it might be caught. The center fielder got the tip of his glove on it, but the ball skipped away and slammed into the wall, sending Coulter Hamilton to score the winning run and the home crowd into celebration.
Final score: Creek Chubs 7, Terre Haute Rex 6.
Earlier in the game Curl sent a rocket shot 422 feet over the center field wall, the same spot he hit the walk off.
The victory pushes the Creek Chubs into first place in their division and extends their home winning streak to six straight games. The Chubs have caught fire at just the right time, winning four consecutive games overall, including victories over the Thrillville Thrillbillies, the Lafayette Aviators, and the Terre Haute Rex.
The numbers reflect the progress this team has made. Through 38 games, the Creek Chubs own a 21-17 overall record and are 17-15 in conference play. They have scored 241 runs while hitting .264 as a team with a .396 on-base percentage and a .388 slugging percentage. They’ve also launched 26 home runs this season, showing they can manufacture runs while still possessing plenty of power throughout the lineup.
Now comes a new challenge.
The Creek Chubs will head out for a week-long road trip before returning home to Municipal Stadium on July 22. Carrying first place into the trip gives the team plenty of confidence, but they’ll have to continue playing the brand of baseball that’s gotten them here, timely hitting, resilience, and finding ways to win close games.
Saturday night’s walk off was more than just another victory. It was another chapter in what has become an exciting season for the Creek Chubs. When the game was on the line, John Curl delivered the biggest hit of the night, proving once again that baseball’s most memorable moments often come when everything is at stake.
