Tigers prevail as Greentown, Lewis Cass, Kokomo fall short

The boys of summer might be heading back to school, but for a moment in late July, the Northwestern 12U All-Stars found their place in the sun. The Tigers topped the competition in the Town and Country State Championship tournament and brought home the trophy.

Having the good fortune of playing the state tourney games at home, Northwestern slugged its way through the bracket to end up on top. Greentown, Kokomo, and Lewis Cass also had 12U all-star teams in the mix, though all fell short of the prize.

The Tigers played more than two weeks of hard-fought games, finishing the stretch with a 7-1 record to capture the runner-up spot in the semi-state tournament. Advancing to the state finals, the boys overcame a challenge from the Plymouth all-stars who had landed a 10U state trophy two years earlier. Five straight wins ensured a title for Northwestern.

Greentown opened its state finals journey with a loss against Lewis Cass, then downed Kokomo and Bunker Hill in the losers’ bracket before falling to Plymouth.

Cass topped Greentown, then fell to Logansport and Plymouth for an early exit. Kokomo’s 12U squad was ushered out quickly with consecutive losses to Logansport and Greentown.

There were 44 teams in the competition across the state, but there was only one champion. The boys of Northwestern are wearing that crown.
