The Eastern Lady Comets volleyball squad has a winning streak going, and Lewis Cass wasn’t about to stop it on Sept. 29. The Lady Kings had no answer for the green and gold powerhouse, falling in straight sets at home, 25-20, 25-10, 25-20.

Eastern won its seventh straight match that night, having last registered a loss on Sept. 19 at home against a powerful South Adams squad. It has since registered three more wins, bringing the streak to 10 games.

At Cass, the Lady Comets relied on a multi-faceted net attack, led by senior MacKenzie Appleton’s 11 kills. She was joined by junior Ava Kinney, who registered seven kills. Freshman Bailey Appleton added seven kills of her own.

Eastern was similarly dominant from the service line, as the team amassed 15 total aces across six servers. MacKenzie Appleton led the way with four aces on 21 total serves.

Defensively, senior Josie Odle and freshman Kaydence Osborne blocked three shots each while Kinney blocked a pair. And the Lady Comets proved they were unafraid to hit the floor, as senior Savannah Smith led her team with 12 digs. The Appletons each contributed six digs in the winning effort.

Odle proved to be the lynchpin of the offense by setting up her teammates with 25 assists, and Savannah Smith kept the ball in play by successfully receiving 12 opposing serves.

Lewis Cass did not provide statistics for this match.

Now at 22-4, Eastern spikes its way toward the postseason with contests at home against Northwestern (14-8) on Oct. 7 and Carroll (8-15) on Oct. 8.

The Lady Kings had a 7-19 record after the loss to Eastern, then fell again to Wabash on Oct. 1. They next face Oak Hill (17-8) on the road tonight and close out the regular season at home against Southwood (22-1) on Oct. 8.
