Nearly one year in, Barnett's experience has been rewarding and transformative

Serving as the Executive Director of the Carver Community Center has been a beautiful and transformative experience. Nearly a year into the role, I reflect on the incredible journey so far — one filled with purpose and challenges, as well as many rewarding moments that affirm this work as God-ordained.

I remember when a friend approached me about the position. The request felt more like divine direction than mere coincidence, and stepping into this role has only confirmed that belief. From the start, this position has been an exciting and dynamic ride, requiring both vision and adaptability to uphold Carver’s mission of supporting children and families through education and recreation.

In less than a year, we’ve experienced the thrills of our Winter Youth Basketball League, bringing the community together through sportsmanship and teamwork. We’ve launched our new flagship Afterschool Program, providing a structured, enriching environment for children beyond school hours. Additionally, we’ve formed impactful partnerships with Bridges Outreach and Purdue Extension Howard County, further expanding our resources and opportunities for local youth.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of this role has been working alongside amazing instructors who bring passion and expertise to programs like Robotics, Dance, Chess Club, and Art. These activities not only nurture creativity and critical thinking but also give young people access to experiences that shape their future aspirations.

However, leadership also comes with tough decisions. To strengthen Carver’s long-term sustainability, we’ve had to eliminate certain programs and part ways with specific partnerships. While difficult, these choices are necessary to ensure that the center continues to serve its mission effectively.

I am grateful to work with a dynamic and talented board led by Bob Knowling, a world-renowned business consultant whose leadership and insight have been invaluable. The collective dedication of our team ensures that Carver remains a pillar of the community.

The future holds limitless possibilities for Carver Community Center. While I can’t predict exactly what’s ahead, one thing is certain: we will continue to build upon a strong legacy of education, recreation, and community support.
