Preschool academy holds graduation filled with growth and promise
On Wednesday evening, May 21, Refreshing Springs Young Hearts Academy hosted its annual graduation ceremony, a vibrant and heartfelt celebration of preschool-aged children preparing to take their next big step into kindergarten. For those who’ve never attended a preschool graduation, this event was a powerful testament to the depth of learning, love, commitment, and leadership poured into the students throughout the year.
From the moment the program began, it was clear the children had experienced a rich and dynamic educational journey. The evening featured a showcase of songs, Spanish vocabulary, dancing, and even sign language. Each presentation highlighted the many ways these young minds are being developed and nurtured to grow in confidence, skill, and curiosity. The joy and pride were unmistakable on every face in the room, children, parents, and teachers alike.
None of this would be possible without the strong leadership behind the scenes. Pastor A. Wendell Brown and First Lady Tarita Brown provide not only spiritual guidance but a steadfast vision for excellence. Cheryl Sutton, Director of the Academy, and April Peters, Assistant Director, work tirelessly to carry out that vision with grace and intention. The dedication of the entire teaching staff reflects the passion and standard set by this leadership team.
Several graduates took the stage to introduce themselves and share their future aspirations. Among them were future doctors, firefighters, police officers, and teachers. It was a touching reminder that the seeds planted in early childhood can grow into dreams that shape communities and impact the world. These children aren’t just learning letters and numbers, they’re learning who they are and who they can become.
“The program, to me, means total growth,” said Director Cheryl Sutton. “When the children come here, our goal is for them to learn, play, and excel. We focus on preparing them for kindergarten and beyond through hands-on, play-based learning. It’s exciting to see how far they come.”
The strong community support for the program was evident in the joyful cheers, applause, and encouragement from parents, relatives, and community leaders. Dignitaries in attendance included Kokomo Mayor Tyler Moore and representatives from the Community Foundation of Howard County, Emerald Blankenship and Carrie Giannakos, both of whom have supported wholeheartedly the Academy’s mission.
Pastor Brown reflected on the significance of the work being done. “We are definitely sowing precious seeds into the hearts of these children,” he said. “Every time we graduate a class, I tear up. I know we’re doing the right thing.”
Refreshing Springs Young Hearts Academy is not just preparing students for kindergarten; it’s building a better future for Kokomo and beyond.
