As Christmas neared, the men of Omega Psi Phi’s Nu Mu Nu Chapter gathered at Jackson Street Commons. Their mission was to provide a breakfast for the residents at the shelter. But it was more than a meal.
Jackson Street Commons is Kokomo’s shelter for military veterans who have fallen on hard times and have no homes to call their own. The Nu Mu Nu fellows chose to serve those who served the nation.
According to Willie Stroman, the chairperson of the chapter’s social committee, the breakfast is something his fraternity offers as a way of saying thanks.
“This is an annual event that we do because we want to acknowledge our veterans,” said Stroman. “We do a pancake breakfast to show appreciation from the fraternity.”
The members of Nu Mu Nu were accompanied by their spouses as they worked together to provide pancakes, sausage, a breakfast casserole, and other tasty breakfast items. More than a dozen veterans stopped by the commons’ dining hall to parktake in the meal and the fellowship that followed.
The Nu Mu Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was chartered in 2016 and encompasses Kokomo and Noblesville with its membership. The local chapter holds fundraising events to fund grants and scholarships, and members perform various acts of community service throughout the year.
The fraternity maintains a life membership with the NAACP. It promotes various health initiatives, encourages voting and assists with voter registration, and participates in larger fraternity events organized by Omega Psi Phi across the state and region.
