All ages are invited to celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial at the upcoming Fourth of July Ice Cream Social, hosted by the Howard County Historical Society from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sat., July 4, at the Seiberling Mansion, 1200 W. Sycamore St.
When the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, the area that would become Howard County was home to indigenous peoples along the Wildcat Creek in the Great Miami Reserve. For America 250 events, HCHS has helped organize unique ways to look at that shared history while also commemorating national and local history right here in Kokomo.
For example, after enjoying some ice cream, visitors can head over to the Elliott House for a history open house where Howard County Historian Gil Porter will talk about people born in the American colonies before or during the Revolution who later came to Howard County, exploring colonial history through their life stories.
HCHS also will debut a new digital kiosk, made possible by a generous grant from the Duke Energy Foundation. Hands-on activities will be provided by General James Cox Chapter of the DAR, Kokomo Piecemakers Quilt Guild, Revival’s Fiber Arts and Gatherings, the Kokomo Art Association, and the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library.
Visitors can try their hand at quilt stitching, paper weaving, bracelet making, coloring pages, a community mosaic, and more. Live music will be provided by the Kokomo Chamber Brass, Kokomo Men of Note, Kokomo Park Band, and the Hoosier String Players.
Activities will take place on the Seiberling Mansion lawn. The event is free and open to all ages. Free ice cream will be served while supplies last. For more information, visit hchistory.org.
This event is made possible due to generous sponsors including the Indiana Semiquincentennial Commission, Martino Realty, Meijer, Merrell Brothers, and the Duke Energy Foundation.
