Nothing compares to having a heart that trusts Him
This article is brought to you by Elect Lisa Washington for Howard County Commissioner District 1. As your county commissioner, I will bring transparency & accountability to local government where it is sorely lacking, ensure our county facilities & infrastructure are properly managed, meaning taxpayer dollars are used more effectively, and bridge the gap in communication between our local and state elected officials to ensure your voice is heard by everyone who represents you.

I often think about my life as an adult and how the world can corrupt the mind, the heart, and even the body. I look at my own kids sometimes, and I just wish I could be as innocent as they are again. There is something about the innocence of a child, the way they see things, the way they love, and the way they trust that makes me reflect on my own walk with Jesus.
Recently, I have been working on a mural that includes Matthew 19:14, and it has really had me thinking about this scripture and what it means to me personally.
In Matthew 19, we find a passage where people brought little children to Jesus so He could lay His hands on them and pray. The disciples tried to rebuke them, but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me...”
I think about that passage and how, as adults, we sometimes lose the very things that make a child’s faith so beautiful. The nature of this life is that we grow up. We experience things, we make mistakes, we learn things we probably wish we had never learned, and we encounter things that change how we see the world. And the reality is, we cannot go back to being children again. That is something we have to accept.
But that doesn’t mean we cannot live with childlike faith.
I strive every single day to be that kind of person. I strive to shed the evil that I have learned and that is so readily available to many of us in this world. I know that I will not get everything right, but I want my heart to always be in a place where I can recognize when I need to turn away from something and turn back to Jesus.
That is important to me. And I hope that for those of you reading this, it is important to you, too.
In our walk of faith, we have to remember that Jesus is our source. He is the One we should be looking to for the fulfillment that nothing else in this world can provide. We can spend our lives chasing so many things, but nothing compares to having a heart that trusts Him.
So, while I may never get to experience the innocence of childhood again, I can still choose to approach Jesus with a heart that trusts Him, depends on Him, and desires to please Him.
May we never get so caught up in this world that we forget how to come to Jesus.
Amen.
