Alan Arnett passing values to his son while playing basketball overseas

Alan Arnett is making an indelible mark in the basketball world for himself, his family, and the city of Kokomo. A native son of Kokomo, Arnett is not just winning championships overseas, he’s creating a legacy built on perseverance, faith, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

I recently had the honor of speaking with Alan about his career, and what I heard was nothing short of inspiring. I asked Alan what it meant to continue playing the game at such a high level. His answer was heartfelt and honest.

“It’s been a blessing to continue to live out my dream of playing professionally,” he shared. “It’s had its peaks and valleys, but these past few years have been my most memorable and successful. I didn’t quit, I kept going. I stayed resilient and consistent, learning to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations.”

That mindset, he explained, is something he tries to pass down not only to his family but to the younger generation through training and by leading with his life. Alan’s son has had a front-row seat to this journey.

“Him coming to practice and workouts with me means everything,” he said. “That’s why I thank God every day for the ability and durability to keep going in my career.”

His life is clearly more than just basketball. It’s about legacy and showing what’s possible when you walk in purpose. That purpose has led him to tremendous success overseas. Arnett currently plays in Bulgaria’s National Basketball League (NBL) for Rilski Sportist, where he’s helped make history by bringing home back-to-back championships and being named Finals MVP in both 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 seasons.

“Winning the club’s first title in 30 years was special,” he said. And to repeat being the Finals MVP, “That’s nothing but God.”

With consistent averages of 15 points, 6.5 rebounds, and three assists in those championship runs, Arnett’s game speaks for itself. He is displaying a level of greatness that he explains is a process.

“I think you should start by finding a passion, set a clear goal, and stick with it,” he said.

It is evident that Arnett follows that model, and attributes much of his success to three things: faith, family, and work ethic.

“I credit my success to God. I thank Him for giving me the ability, the guidance, the strength to pursue my passion and achieve my goals,” said Arnett. “I also have an incredible support system, my family. Knowing that my circle will always be there means a lot.

“Beyond that, it’s about dedication and hard work, and goal setting; goals that challenge you and that are achievable and wanting to grow and be willing to learn.”

Playing overseas isn’t always glamorous. The long months away from family, cultural adjustments, and physical toll are real. But through it all, Alan remains grounded.

“My son is my biggest motivation now,” Arnett said. “Whether it’s a tough loss, bad game, or days I’m drained after our fourth or fifth practice in three days, just seeing his face, his presence keeps me going.”

He explained that obstacles mold character, which plays into his motivation as well. Arnett said he doesn’t choose to be away from his family eight or nine months out of the year to not give his best to the game he loves.

“My family wanting me to accomplish goals I set for myself, those things are a driving force for me,” he said.

As our conversation ended, I asked Alan what legacy he hopes to leave behind. His answer was profound.

“The legacy I want for myself, and my family, is that I was more than just a hooper or strived for recognition,” said Arnett. “Making a positive impact through the mentoring or training I do. My values. Staying true to myself and leading with integrity is what I want my legacy to be.

“Being able to represent my city has been a blessing. Just being a kid from a small town like mine that went through trials and tribulations growing up was still able to pursue his passion live out his dreams and be successful at it. That means something to me.”

Alan Arnett is showing young people everywhere what is possible. One game, one season, one life lesson at a time.
