A letter to the editor from the Howard County Tobacco Prevention Coalition
Earth Day is a time to reflect on how our everyday choices impact the environment, but one often overlooked source of pollution is tobacco and nicotine products.
Cigarette butts are the most commonly littered item in the world, with an estimated 4.5 trillion discarded globally each year. These filters are made of plastic (cellulose acetate) and can persist in the environment while releasing toxic chemicals into soil and waterways (Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, 2023).
The environmental impact extends beyond litter. Tobacco production contributes to deforestation, water pollution, and pesticide exposure, while cigarette butts and electronic nicotine products create additional environmental and hazardous waste (Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, 2023).
Emerging research also highlights that tobacco product waste, including cigarette butts and e-cigarette components, can contaminate ecosystems and pose risks to both environmental and human health (Talbot et al., 2025).
As we work to protect our environment this Earth Day, it’s important to recognize that reducing tobacco use also helps reduce environmental harm. Preventing use, supporting those who want to quit, and properly disposing of tobacco products are all steps toward a cleaner, healthier community.
