The Juneteenth Jubilee celebration took place on Saturday, June 20, on the square surrounding the courthouse in downtown Kokomo. The annual event brought together families, community members, vendors, entertainers, and local leaders for a day filled with celebration, reflection, and unity.

The Juneteenth Jubilee is a partnership between the Kokomo Housing Authority and Carver Community Center; organizations committed to serving and strengthening the Kokomo community.

Attendees enjoyed a variety of food vendors, community booths, and live entertainment throughout the day. The event opened with an inspiring performance by Women of Worship, a collective group of women dedicated to singing praises unto the Lord. Their powerful voices immediately energized the crowd, with many attendees singing, clapping, dancing, and worshiping alongside them. Led by Christina Vaughan, the group delivered a memorable opening that set the tone for the day’s festivities.

Before the musical performances began, Frederick Murrell delivered a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. His performance was followed by Women of Worship’s powerful presentation of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” creating an emotional and inspiring start to the celebration.

Additional musical performances included local favorite Winston Howard, whose electric guitar performance captivated the audience. The evening concluded with a highly anticipated performance by The Flying Toasters, a talented and popular band known throughout Kokomo and beyond for their energetic cover songs and crowd-pleasing entertainment.

One of the event’s most meaningful moments came during the presentation of the Breaking Chains Award. This year’s honor was awarded to Isaac White in recognition of his tremendous impact on the community through his service as a school board member, coach, mentor, and advocate for youth and families. His dedication to helping others has left a lasting mark on countless lives throughout the area.

The event also featured a food truck competition that showcased some of the area’s finest culinary offerings. Imagine Burgers Food Truck earned the Judges Award, while The Fresh Fix Cafe finished as the runner up. Six Pack Smokehouse captured the People’s Choice Award, earning recognition from attendees for its outstanding food and service.

This year’s Juneteenth Jubilee also featured a partnership with the Haynes-Apperson Festival, which was held nearby at Foster Park. The collaboration provided residents and visitors with opportunities to enjoy both events while celebrating the rich history and culture of the community.

Derick Steele, Executive Director of the Kokomo Housing Authority, reflected on the significance and continued growth of the event.

“Juneteenth is a day to celebrate freedom and community,” said Steele. “Our Juneteenth Jubilee continues to be a shining example of this. The Juneteenth Jubilee continues to grow and surpass our expectations.

“I know I personally was moved to tears by Frederick Murrell’s rendition of the National Anthem only to be inspired and empowered by the Women Who Worship’s ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing.’ It was the perfect start to an amazing celebration. I know that all those who helped make the Juneteenth Jubilee a reality were honored to be part of such a wonderful community event.”

The Juneteenth Jubilee commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and serves as a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of freedom, equality, and opportunity. This year’s celebration coincided with America’s 250th birthday observance, allowing attendees to honor both the nation’s history and the progress made toward a more united future.
