Kokomo High School held its 150th graduation on Friday, May 31, celebrating the legacy of accomplishment and pride that connected the more than 330 graduates and their families with previous generations, using music, accolades, and history in the making as graduates received their diplomas.
"Tonight, as we come together in our historic Memorial Gymnasium, we honor our enduring legacy," stated Kokomo Center Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Sargent. "In 1919, my great-grandfather proudly graduated from Kokomo High School. I am honored to know that he was the first in our family to earn a diploma from Kokomo High School more than 100 years ago."
Kokomo Center Schools Board of Trustees President David Emry continued with the theme of legacy as he asked the soon-to-be graduates to "leave a legacy of empathy and understanding fostering a sense of collaboration," as they go out into the world.
Magna cum laude graduate Alona Smith's speech reminded the class of the turmoil of their freshman-year high school classes during the first portions of the pandemic that disrupted normal high school class activities.
"We beat the odds,” Smith proclaimed triumphantly. “Studies proved that after everything we went through, we weren't supposed to succeed. But again, we beat the odds."
Summa cum laude graduate Elizabeth Hunter challenged the KHS graduating class of 2024 to "carry this legacy out into the world. Regardless of where you are living, be the light. Be the one who makes life easier, the one who helps someone out of the darkness."
Kokomo High School Principal Angela Blessing also noted to the assembled crowd that despite its small size, the KHS Class of 2024 brought in $13.9 million dollars in scholarships and awards.
