'Liberty!' concert features local talent July 3

The Kokomo Park Band invites the community to celebrate Independence Day with a night of music and Americana at its annual patriotic concert, "Liberty!" on Wednesday, July 3. This free concert kicks off at 7:30 p.m. in Highland Park and is sponsored by Bayliff, Harrigan, Cord, Maugans & Cox, P.C. - Attorneys at Law.

The evening promises a program brimming with patriotic melodies conducted by KPB Artistic Director Jay Gephart. Local vocalists Cody Kopka and Cherresa Lawson will grace the stage, lending their talents to the festivities. Members of the Albert E. Shockey Marine Corps League Detachment will add a touch of solemnity with the presentation of colors.

The "Serving in Love Team" of Morning Star Church will keep the community well-fed with popcorn and drinks, while volunteers from Highland Park Church will distribute programs. Curt Alexander will serve as the evening's emcee.

Knowing Indiana weather can be unpredictable, the concert organizers have a backup plan in place. Should rain dampen the festivities, the concert will be moved indoors to the Kokomo High School Auditorium. Attendees can expect a decision regarding the venue by 4:30 p.m. on Facebook and via a recorded message at 765-319-8554.

The concert program, aptly titled "Liberty!" features a selection of stirring favorites that evoke the spirit of America. The program includes:

"Liberty," by Rossano Galante, a powerful piece that captures the essence of Americana through the lens of a film score composer.

John Williams' "Liberty Fanfare," a rousing composition written to celebrate the centennial of the Statue of Liberty in 1986.

"Chimes of Liberty," by Edwin Franko Goldman, a classic that evokes a sense of hope and perseverance.

"Tribute to Irving Berlin" by Warren Barker, a medley honoring the legendary composer who penned countless American standards.

John Phillip Sousa's timeless "The Liberty Bell," a piece instantly recognizable to audiences of all ages.

The program also features talented local vocalists. Tenor Cody Kopka, who has performed with a range of Kokomo's musical ensembles, will grace the stage with "You Raise Me Up." Cherresa Lawson, director of the award-winning Karisma Singers at Kokomo High School, will deliver a soulful rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

The program includes a special tribute to veterans with "Semper Supra," the official march of the U.S. Space Force, and "Armed Forces Salute." Veterans in the audience will be recognized as their service song is played, creating a heartwarming moment of appreciation. The concert concludes with the iconic "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa, bringing the evening to a stirring close.

Mark your calendars and join the Kokomo Park Band for a beautiful evening celebrating America's independence. This free concert offers a chance to connect with the community, enjoy the talents of local musicians, and celebrate the spirit of patriotism.
