Ind. 931 completion to be followed by closures along bypass

As the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) finishes up work along State Road 931, local motorists are reminded that construction crews will be moving over to U.S. 31 in Howard County to complete repairs on that roadway.

Concrete barrier walls were installed on June 24 so that concrete restoration work on U.S. 31 could be completed at the north and south junctions with State Road 931. That reconstruction is expected to be completed in August.

However, concrete reconstruction is planned all along the U.S. 31 bypass, encompassing 13.2 miles of roadway. As reported by the Kokomo Lantern in March, additional work is expected along U.S. 31, as disclosed by Mayor Tyler Moore.

“They're planning to do a whole resurfacing of 931 and removing guard rails,” said Moore. “They're doing both sides, all the way up to Markland, maybe Vaile Avenue. And then once they get that done, they’ll hop over to the bypass (U.S. 31). It's going to be a total shutdown along a mile stretch.”

Moore said U.S. 31 traffic will be rerouted to Ind. 931 during that phase of construction.

INDOT lists the project as having a completion date sometime in the second quarter of 2026, though the project could be completed earlier.

The Ind. 931 project involved resurfacing nearly six miles of four-lane highway at a cost of $9.4 million and reconstruction of the median at a cost of nearly $400,000. The concrete reconstruction along U.S. 31 is expected to cost $9.8 million.
