Indiana Black Expo Kokomo celebrates 28 years of empowering scholars
On Thursday, July 24, the Indiana Black Expo (IBE) Kokomo Chapter held its 28th Annual Scholarship Luncheon at the Elite Conference Center, gathering a strong cross-section of Kokomo’s community leaders, supporters, and change-makers.
This year’s luncheon was not just a celebration of academic excellence, but a powerful statement of commitment to the next generation, as IBE proudly announced it has given $74,000 over the years and will provide $4,500 in scholarship funds to support young scholars pursuing higher education this year.
The room was filled with a sense of purpose and pride. Among the attendees were school administrators, healthcare professionals, corporate executives, city officials, and even Kokomo’s mayor. Each guest played a part in shaping the lives of local youth, and their presence underscored the collective effort it takes to make lasting impact.
The luncheon served not only as a fundraiser but also as a moment to reflect on IBE Kokomo’s broader contributions to the community. Beyond scholarships, the organization is deeply invested in supporting children’s health, particularly in areas such as dental care—an often-overlooked factor in student well-being and confidence. As school season approaches, IBE also has been instrumental in providing school supplies and resources to ensure students are well-equipped to start the year strong.
IBE member Mr. Ed Foster expressed pride in the milestone.
“I want to congratulate IBE on the 28th annual luncheon,” said Foster. “It’s an exciting time for our scholar recipients and for the community to come together. Every year this event is well attended, and this year was no exception. We’re already looking forward to making next year’s 29th even better.”
The keynote speaker, Emmy Award-winning journalist Raphael Sanchez, brought a dynamic and heartfelt message that resonated with everyone in the room. Known for his humor and energy, Sanchez delivered a clear and inspiring challenge: give back. Drawing from his personal experience of working on a farm to grow thousands of pounds of food for families in need, he encouraged the audience to recognize their own gifts and use them to uplift others.
“Everyone in this room has a gift, a talent,” Sanchez said. “Use your resources. Find what you love to do—and let that passion serve others.”
In recognition of his message and meaningful contribution, IBE Kokomo Chapter President Willie Stroman presented Sanchez with a special award, thanking him for inspiring the community and standing as a model of servant leadership.
With hearts full and vision renewed, the IBE Kokomo Chapter continues its legacy of service, preparing today’s youth for a brighter tomorrow.
