Brittany Ussery empowers through hair education
Brittany Ussery, the heart behind Innate Texture, recently wrapped up a Curly & Coily Hair Workshop at Carver Community Center. This interactive workshop brought together people from all backgrounds — especially parents looking to better care for their children’s textured hair — and offered something much deeper than styling tips.
“These workshops meet people exactly where they are,” Ussery said. “We cover everything from wash-day routines and curl patterns to deeper conversations around outdated hair terminology and the CROWN Act.”
Ussery’s love for curly hair care started early, but it came into full bloom in 2018 when she moved to Houston.
“Immersed in a diverse community and a totally different climate, I began to sharpen my skills and expand my understanding of textured hair,” she explained. “Houston gave me more than just technique—it gave me perspective.”
After returning to Indiana in 2022, Ussery launched her first multicultural coaching session. That one step led to what is now a growing movement.
“I realized the same confusion and embarrassment I once felt about my own curls were showing up in the faces of my clients, especially parents caring for their children’s hair and not knowing where to start,” she said.
Ussery's workshops are intentionally hands-on. Participants don’t just hear what to do, they do it.
“Watching videos or hearing tips is one thing, but actually doing the work, detangling, styling, parting, is where the real growth happens,” she said.
Each attendee leaves with tools, practice, and real confidence. Her ultimate goal? Empowerment.
“I want every curly-haired individual to walk away feeling more confident, not just in their hair care skills, but in who they are,” Ussery shared. “Confidence is always the goal.”
Founded in September 2023, Innate Texture already has grown into a full salon in Fishers, Indiana. Ussery’s vision extends beyond clients to fellow stylists.
“I want stylists to feel free to grow in their own way while being supported mentally, emotionally, and financially,” said Ussery. “Inclusion should be woven into everything we do, not just for clients, but for the team, too.”
As for the beauty industry as a whole, Brittany is determined to shift the culture.
“Textured hair is not a niche; it’s a vital part of the beauty industry,” she said. “I hope to create a culture where curly hair education is treated with the same importance as any other standard.”
For Ussery, every curl tells a story, and through Innate Texture, she’s helping those stories be heard, honored, and beautifully celebrated.
