Still time for local elementary students to register and compete for $500 top prize
Gentlemen and Scholars, Inc. is coming to town for an exciting collaboration with the Carver Community Center, hosting the much-anticipated Spelling Bee Explosion on Sunday, November 9, at 3 p.m. This special event invites elementary students in grades 3 through 5 to step into the spotlight, build their confidence, and showcase their growing command of the English language.
The Spelling Bee Explosion is more than a competition, it’s a platform that nurtures young minds, teaching them the power of words and the importance of communication. The ability to spell, read, and write effectively gives children tools that reach far beyond the classroom. Whether it’s excelling academically, expressing themselves clearly in relationships, or preparing for future career opportunities, strong communication skills lay the foundation for lifelong success.
Carver Community Center’s Executive Director JC Barnett III reflected on the significance of this partnership.
“It’s been a long time coming, this opportunity to work with Gentlemen and Scholars,” said Barnett. “Several years back, on the campus of IU Kokomo, I met William Douglas through a mutual friend, Shawn Thomas. Years later, we are finally able to connect on this Spelling Bee and do something wonderful together.”
Douglas, founder of Gentlemen and Scholars, shared his passion for what the event represents.
“The story of the Spelling Bee is a story of confidence, preparation, and finding the power of your voice,” said Douglas. “After participating, each scholar gains valuable experience they’ll remember and utilize the rest of their lives.”
The event will reward excellence and effort through generous prizes. The first-place winner will receive $500, second place earns $300, and third place takes home $200. Every participant will be recognized with a prize for their hard work and courage. As G&S staff member Cory Brazier put it, “Even just entering the competition makes you a winner.”
Parents can still register their students by emailing scholarup1@gmail.com. The community is encouraged to attend and cheer on these bright young scholars as they take the stage and give spelling their very best shot.
