Jane Pauley Community Health Center urges early detection and integrated care

November marks American Diabetes Month, bringing attention to a condition that affects nearly 12 percent of Indiana residents and continues to place significant health and economic strain on communities across the state. The American Diabetes Association estimates diabetes costs Indiana $6.5 billion each year, and the state holds the 10th highest diabetes rate in the nation.

Providers at the Jane Pauley Community Health Center (JPCHC) emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, comprehensive treatment, and integrated support for individuals living with or at risk of diabetes.

“Raising awareness about diabetes is critical, as millions of people remain undiagnosed and untreated, placing them at risk for serious complications,” said Dr. Daniel Frick, Family Medicine Physician and Medical Director at JPCHC. “Early detection and timely intervention are vital to prevent adverse outcomes and ensure access to life-saving care.”

Dr. Frick also highlighted the importance of understanding your risk for developing diabetes.

“More than one-third of U.S. adults have prediabetes, which significantly increases the risk of progression to diabetes without intervention,” Dr. Frick explained. “Evidence shows that lifestyle changes and, in some cases, medication can prevent or delay diabetes onset. People concerned about their risk should discuss screening and prevention strategies with their healthcare provider.”

In addition to physical health concerns, behavioral health plays a crucial role in diabetes management.

“Three out of four people living with diabetes have experienced anxiety, depression, or another mental health condition related to their diabetes,” said Dr. Gabrielle Pointon, Director of Integrated Health Services at JPCHC. “These factors can make diabetes management much more difficult.

“This Diabetes Awareness Month, it’s important to recognize that mental and emotional stressors can play a big part in diabetes management and treatment. Integrated healthcare is key to providing individuals with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, access to holistic care.”

JPCHC aims to provide integrated and accessible physical and mental healthcare to those living with chronic conditions such as diabetes, helping with management, screening and prevention, and education.
