Sometimes, it’s not about the score.

Western Middle School hosted its cross-county rivals Eastern for a co-ed swimming and diving meet Feb. 11. Unlike high school competitions, scores and finishes aren’t well-recorded at the middle school level, but that takes nothing away from the effort put into the pool by the young men and women who competed.

In fact, the young Panthers and Comets put on a heartwarming display of camaraderie and sportsmanship over the course of the evening. Fist bumps were delivered across lane markers as the races finished, and both teams cheered on their teammates in each competition.

And there was plenty to cheer. The student-athletes dove into the pool with the same fervor and intensity their high school contemporaries embrace in varsity competition. Each launch off the starting blocks, each stroke, each diver’s rotation provided excitement for the crowd and an opportunity to improve and hone technique for the swimmers and divers.
