The Greentown Historical Society will debut a new exhibit at the History Center on Sat., April 4. In 2026, the U.S. will celebrate its Semiquincentennial to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Greentown Historical Society will open a new exhibit that focuses on the history of schools in eastern Howard County (Liberty, Jackson, Union, Howard, Taylor Township), beginning with the story of the early history of the Greentown area and its settlement after Indiana became an official state in 1816.
The displays will feature maps and photos of the earliest one-room schools, photos and stories of the schools of the eastern five townships of Howard County, and athletic and class clothing, including senior cords.
Patrons loaned various items related to this theme for the exhibit, and provided information on topics such as floor plans, knowledge of school history, room arrangements, period clothing, and artifacts. This community-sourced exhibit is certain to bring back a flood of memories for those who grew up in the local schools. The historical society invites you to visit and sing along with your school’s fight song.
Visiting times are Saturdays and Mondays from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Other times to visit can be arranged by calling 765-628-3800 or emailing office@greentownhistoricalsociety.org. The Greentown Historical Society is located at 103 E. Main St. in Greentown.
