When we rush, we overlook details, ignore warning signs, and allow our emotions to make decisions

“Be quick, but not in a hurry.” Those six words have stayed with me for 22 years since I graduated from high school. At the time, I heard them in the context of basketball from an old coach of mine, but over the years I’ve realized they had very little to do with the game itself. They became a philosophy for life.
Life moves fast. In the blink of an eye, everything can change. Opportunities come and go. Challenges appear without warning. Sometimes you’re forced to make difficult decisions with very little time to think. That’s where a sense of urgency becomes important. You have to be willing to act. You have to be prepared. You have to be quick.
But being quick doesn’t mean being in a hurry.
There’s a major difference between moving with purpose and rushing through a process. Hurrying often creates chaos. When we rush, we overlook details, ignore warning signs, and allow our emotions to make decisions our minds should be making. We become more concerned about finishing than finishing well.
Being quick means staying focused. It means recognizing the moment, making thoughtful decisions, and responding with confidence. Even when time is limited, there’s still room to be intentional. The best decisions are often made by people who remain calm while everyone else is panicking.
I’ve learned that taking your time doesn’t always mean taking longer. It means giving your full attention to what matters most. When you’re conscientious about your work, your relationships, and your responsibilities, the results are usually stronger, healthier, and far less chaotic.
Every challenge you overcome prepares you for another one. Graduation from one obstacle usually means enrollment into the next. That’s simply part of life, especially when you’ve been blessed with gifts, and talents, and a desire to make a difference.
So whatever challenge you’re facing today, approach it with urgency. Don’t procrastinate. Don’t hesitate when it’s time to move. But never allow urgency to become panic.
Be quick as the moment requires, but never, ever be in a hurry. That’s a lesson worth carrying for a lifetime.
