Donald R. "Don" Cravens

Donald R. "Don" Cravens, a devoted family man and proud veteran, passed away on August 20, 2025, in Kokomo, Indiana. He was 89 years old. Don was born on February 15, 1936, in Saline County, Illinois, to John M. Cravens Jr and Bessie (Shadowens) Cravens.

Don began his education at Bond School near Galatia, Illinois, and later attended Marion Junior High School in Marion, Illinois. Don earned his GED and continued his education through the U.S. Air Force.

In June of 1954, Don enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, embarking on a distinguished 20-year military career. He completed basic training at Sampson AFB, advanced training in Aircraft Electrical at Chanute AFB, and later worked in transportation. His service took him across the globe to bases, including Norton AFB, Iceland; Mather AFB; Ramstein AFB; and Grissom AFB. Don served two tours in Vietnam before retiring honorably from Grissom AFB in 1974.

After retiring from the military, he worked their farm near Peru, Indiana, hosting many memorable Fourth of July picnics that brought neighbors together and created lasting friendships. Don and his first wife Ruthann also ran the Cravens Trading Post in Peru, where Don’s gift for haggling shined. His family often found themselves swept up in his latest finds and auction adventures, never quite knowing what he might bring home next.

He enjoyed simple pleasures: playing poker with family, visiting antique malls and yard sales, haggling, watching westerns, spoiling his grandchildren and dog Chase, and collecting classic cars, with a special fondness for Cadillacs. Don was also an exceptional cook whose breakfasts, homemade bread, and pies are fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of sharing a meal with him.

Don’s life was deeply rooted in faith and family. He studied the Bible daily. In his youth, he helped build Smart’s Chapel near his childhood home with his brothers and sister Ruby Clarida.

Don was preceded in death by his two beloved wives Ruthann (Spicka) Cravens, who passed away in 1996, and Peggy Cresto, who passed away in 2023. He was also preceded in death by his son Donald M. Cravens; sister Ruby Clarida; brothers Theodore "Ted" Cravens, Earl Cravens, Paul Cravens, Jessie Cravens, and Huey Cravens; sisters-in-law Marge Spicka, Ginny Krocker, and Nancy Schisler; and brothers-in-law Mike Spicka and Hank Krocker.

Left to treasure his memory are his children: Sue (Larry) Webb, Ted (Kim) Cravens, Maggie (John) Bartlett, and Bette (Kevin) Moffett; stepson Lee Powell; brother-in-law Ken Schisler; and several nieces and nephews. Don's legacy continues through his cherished 18 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

A man of unwavering faith, Don lived a full life marked by service to country, devotion to family and friends, and everyday adventures. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to all who hear his story.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Stout and Son Funeral Home, 200 E Main St., Russiaville, Indiana, with Pastor Jason Grant officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1-3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burr Otha Sheveily

Burr Otha Sheveily, affectionately known to all as Burr, Buck, or Shive, lived a life marked by kindness, humor, and an unwavering friendliness that drew people to him. Born on February 5, 1944, in Marion, Indiana, to loving parents Burr and Helen (Barkdull) Sheveily, he married Peggy Ault on August 30, 1963, in Marion. On August 21, 2025, Burr passed away peacefully in Kokomo, Indiana, surrounded by the love of his family and the memories of a life well-lived.

Burr's early years in Marion laid a solid foundation for a life of dedication and hard work. A proud graduate of Van Buren High School in 1962, Burr went on to further his education with college courses at Indiana University/Purdue University Kokomo (IUPUK). Burr's career path led him to work at RCA in Marion for a few years before he found his long-term professional home at the Chrysler Transmission Plant in Kokomo in 1965. He began working on the line, then Inspection, and later moved to the Gauge Crib, where he remained until his retirement in 2004. Not one to sit idle, Burr continued to serve his community by working for the City of Kokomo Parks Department for an additional 10 years after his retirement from Chrysler.

Burr's passions particularly for classic muscle cars and watching racing brought him enjoyment. Whether it was the family ’71 Charger, his ’55 Chevy, or his 300 Hemi, he loved muscle power and classic cars.

Described by those who knew him as kind, funny, and friendly, Burr had a remarkable ability to make everyone he met feel like an old friend. His silly jokes and teasing were familiar sounds that could brighten even the gloomiest of days, and his sense of humor was a gift he generously shared with all. He made a name for himself at his recent home, 5 Star Residences, due to his humor.

Burr's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife Peggy, who stood by him as a partner and confidant throughout their life together. His children Christina Sheveily and Burr Otha Sheveily III (Leon Graham), siblings Ralph (Billie) Sheveily, Patricia Osborn, Philip (Joy) Sheveily, and Edgar Sheveily, along with many nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and close friends, will continue to honor his memory through stories and shared moments that exemplify the extraordinary life Burr led.

Burr is predeceased by his parents and siblings David Sheveily, Paul Sheveily, John Sheveily, Cheryl Ann Smith, and Glen Sheveily, as well as his special buddy Sarge, who trained him to cater to his every whim.

The family would like to recognize the staff and friends at 5 Star Residences, Elite Rehab, Anew Hospice, and many others that showed so much care and compassion to Burr and Peggy during this time. Please contribute to your favorite charity, hospice, or Sarge’s Animal Rescue (www.sarges.org) in Waynesville, NC in Burr’s honor. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
