Marvin Edwin Ellis
Marvin Edwin Ellis, 77, of Frankton, Indiana, formerly of Greentown, passed away peacefully at 10:10 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at his home, comforted by the presence of his devoted family. Born on September 12, 1948, in Marion, Indiana, Marvin was the cherished son of the late Fred and Nina Ruth (Keesling) Ellis.
After graduating from Eastern Junior-Senior High School in Greentown in 1968, Marvin answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy on May 28 of that year. Following basic training in Chicago, Illinois, he began his naval career aboard the USS Forrestal aircraft carrier as a Boatswain’s Mate. This formative experience laid the groundwork for an extraordinary and varied career across multiple branches of the United States Armed Forces.
After four years of distinguished service in the Navy, Marvin pursued higher education to further his expertise in communication technologies—a field inspired by his military experiences and growing passion for public affairs. He attended Indiana Wesleyan College in Marion, Indiana, in 1974 and later transferred to Indiana University in Bloomington, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Telecommunications in 1978. Marvin’s academic path underscored his dedication to combining military service with advanced technical knowledge, preparing him for impactful roles in both military and civilian public information services.
From October 28, 1978, to May 31, 1983, Marvin served with distinction in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. His assignments included Aircraft Maintenance School, Public Affairs Office Advanced School, Air Force Recruiting, and service in the Air Force Public Affairs Office. Marvin was honored with the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for his dedication and exemplary service.
Marvin transitioned to the Army in October 1983, where his unwavering commitment and leadership were quickly recognized. He achieved the rank of Captain on September 18, 1985, and Major on October 26, 1992. He was especially proud of his time spent in 1991 during the Gulf War in Iraq, when he was assigned to escort CNN news reporters in and out of conflict zones. Additionally, he was the public affairs officer who assisted in handling media relations for the Kuwaiti burning caused by Iraqi forces. Marvin’s exemplary service was recognized with numerous commendations, including the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the National Defense Service Medal with a bronze service star, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon. He retired after a remarkable 26-year military career.
Marvin was known for his strong sense of independence and unwavering reliability—a hallmark of the Ellis family. He balanced steadfastness with a gentle, lighthearted spirit, often sharing subtle humor and a deep appreciation for his mother’s home cooking. His love of sports cars and Harley-Davidson motorcycles reflected his zest for life and adventurous nature. Marvin’s unique character endeared him to all who knew him.
Marvin is survived by his daughter Abbigail Christine (’Abbi’) Ellis and her partner, Andrew Parker; his son William Patrick (’Will’) Ellis and his fiancée, Shelby Baker; and his cherished granddaughters Opal Baker, Sybil Ann Ellis, and Laney Ann Parker. He is also survived by his brothers Richard Ellis and Larry Ellis, along with Larry’s wife Peggy. Glenn Ray Hinkle Sr.
Glenn Ray Hinkle Sr., 71, of Kempton, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 6, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Glenn was born on July 29, 1954, to his parents Donald Max Hinkle and Irma Ruth (Barnett) Hinkle. Glenn married Sandra (Deweese) Hinkle on Feb. 27, 1972. The two made a beautiful life together and enjoyed raising their wonderful children before Sandra passed away in 2001. Glenn remarried Leslie (Bowman) Hinkle on March 16, 2003. Glenn and Leslie shared seven years together before Leslie passed away in 2010.
Glenn was simple and private by nature. He was the kind of person you could always count on; dependable, loyal, and strong. He worked tirelessly in fiberglass, masonry, construction, and pole barns. His skill set came from a lifetime of hands-on experience. His life was grounded in perseverance, resilience, and pride. He provided well for his family and set a lasting example for them. Few people knew that Glenn could not read. He faced the challenge of complex dyslexia. He never let this define him. This struggle actually made him stronger in many ways.
Glenn found joy and peace outdoors, hunting and fishing with his brothers and grandsons. For over 25 years, he and his brothers helped John Martino lead the Jim “Moose” Carden Kids Fishing Clinic at Kokomo Reservoir, passing on the joy of the outdoors and teaching children the value of patience and respect for nature. Glenn also personally taught all of his grandchildren gun safety. Showing them not just how to handle a weapon, but how to carry responsibly with care and wisdom.
He was naturally a mentor! He taught life’s most important lessons through his actions. Through strength and humility, he showed up every single day for those he loved. Glenn leaves behind a legacy not of wealth or fame but of hard work, strength of character, quiet wisdom, and steadfast love. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Those left to carry on Glenn’s legacy of love are his children Sherri Haskett (Michael), Glenda Hinkle (Tony Minton), Glenn Hinkle Jr. (Kristina); grandchildren Samantha Despain (Josh), Ashley Hinkle, Brittney Haskett (Zach Young), Steven Roa, CJ Haskett (Alexis), Blake Hinkle (Kenzie), Chase Roa, Katelyn Stutzman (Braydon), Shelby Overdorf (Sam), Kaylee Piske (Evan), Collin Hughes (Claire Boyer), and Gatlin Hinkle; and 16 great grandchildren (with several more on the way); siblings Don Hinkle (Vickie), Gary Hinkle (Glenn’s best friend); Deritha McKee (Dennis), Hink Hinkle (Sharon), Danny Hinkle (Bridget). Glenn is also survived by additional extended family, including several step-siblings, two step-children, six step-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Glenn was preceded in death by his father Donald Hinkle; stepmother Patricia Hinkle; mother Irma Barnett; wife Sandra (Deweese) Hinkle; wife Leslie (Bowman) Hinkle; brother David Hinkle; and sister-in-law Linda Hinkle.
A service celebrating Glenn’s life will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Taylor & Cowan Funeral Home, located at 314 N. Main St. in Tipton, with Pastor Steve Brown officiating. A visitation for family and friends will take place prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be held immediately following the service at Kempton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Glenn’s honor can be made to the Howard County Kids Fishing Clinic. Donations can be mailed to John Martino at 12825 W. 100 N. Kokomo, IN 46901.
Taylor & Cowan Funeral Home is honored to serve Glenn’s family in their time of need. Please feel free to leave an online condolence or share a special memory of Glenn with his family on his tribute wall.
Richard “Rich” Sidney Stroud
Richard “Rich” Sidney Stroud, 83, of Kokomo, IN, passed away at 5:36 p.m. Sunday, October 5, 2025, at Ascension St. Vincent-86th Street in Indianapolis. He was born on October 13, 1941, in Kinston, North Carolina, the son of the late Otto Clay and Helen (Settle) Stroud. On September 1, 1963, he married Dorothy “Doll” (Groet) Stroud in Grifton, North Carolina.
Rich was a 1959 graduate of Ayden High School. He was also a 1963 graduate of North Carolina State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and was inducted into several honor societies and fraternities, including Phi Kappa Tau. In his early career, Rich worked for Dupont in Kinston, NC, and Seaford, DE. In 1968, Richard and Doll relocated to Kokomo, IN, where Rich retired from Delco Electronics after 33 years of service. While at Delphi, Rich invented many things, obtaining multiple patents, many of which are still held by General Motors today. Upon retirement, Rich remained an active member of the American Engineering Society (AES). Rich had a consulting firm, “Stroud Audio,” for many years, traveling to places like Korea, Japan, Netherlands, and Singapore to teach others about Audio Design and Automotive Audio.
A long-time member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, Rich was a member of the choir and sang with Touch of Sunday, a local barbershop quartet. He contributed music in several plays at the Kokomo Civic Theatre, where he especially loved playing the guitar and bass. He wrote many songs, teaching his kids and grandkids the love of music. In the late ‘70s, he even won a contest at WWKI Kokomo with a song, “Twister.” One of Rich’s joys was being a HAM radio operator. He built HAM radios with his father and communicated with people all around the world.
Shortly before his passing, he became an organ donor, allowing others to live on through his generosity. This desire came from his charitable heart as a life-long blood donor, giving well over 20 gallons of blood through the years. The family has joked that whoever receives organ donations from Richard will suddenly have cravings for international cuisine and will desire to upgrade their speaker systems!
In addition to his wife Dorothy “Doll,” Richard is survived by: his son Jonathan Stroud, his wife Wendy, and their children Hannah and Abigail of Charleston, SC; daughter-in-law Wendy and her children Colton, Kaeleigh, and Addy of McKinney, TX; and Richard’s sisters Elizabeth (Lib) S. Campbell (husband Tom) of Raleigh, NC, and Elaine (Laine) S. Lipson (husband Garry) of Pittsboro, NC.
Rich was preceded in death by his parents and son Michael Richard Stroud.
A service celebrating Rich’s life will take place at 1 p.m. Monday, October 13, 2025, which would have been his 84th birthday, at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 5741 West 100 North, Kokomo, with Pastor Joe Johnson officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the church from 11 a.m. until the start of the service on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church or We Care Kokomo. Burial will take place in the Stroud family plot in Ayden Cemetery-Ayden, NC. Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes & Crematory have been entrusted with arrangements.
We will celebrate Richard for a second time with our North Carolina family and friends at Ayden United Methodist Church on November 15, 2025, at 1 p.m., with a reception to follow in the Stroud Building. All are welcome!
