Oren “Dodie” Walter Hammond Jr.

Oren “Dodie” Walter Hammond Jr., 85 years old, of Kokomo, passed away 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at home surrounded by family. He was born in Kokomo, IN, on February 16, 1940, the son of the late Oren Walter Hammond Sr. and Mildred Hammond. On September 16, 1967, he finally married his childhood muse Mary Ella (Fennell) Hammond, who preceded him in death on August 2, 1996.

Oren graduated from Winter Park High School in Winter Park, Florida. He very proudly served our country in the United States Air Force from 1959 through 1965. He served with the Strategic Air Command as a Personal Equipment Specialist and Primary Instructor. He worked at Chrysler Corp. on the production line and retired while ethically working in the salvage department. He was the best protector, provider, and father to his family. He found joy being in wide open spaces, spending much time outdoors mushroom hunting, searching for stones, minerals, and hand-painted bottles. Many days, he would fall asleep while swinging in his backyard and watching clouds and birds. He was an avid collector, enjoyed antiquing, science, botany, and when younger he enjoyed spelunking. He loved traveling to new places to engage in horse racing, and rarely did he take the same route both directions. He was a lover of music, and especially enjoyed listening to bluegrass, country, gospel, and any music from the 1940s or ‘50s. Oren possessed artistic skill that he displayed in oil painting and in creating jewelry, bolo ties, and belt buckles out of rare stones and minerals. Most everyone who crossed paths with Oren commented on his humor. He was tough on the outside but tender on the inside and was commonly referred to as “my favorite.” Oren was President of the Commodore Club and a member of the Eagles Club, and with fervor turned down many opportunities to be a foreman at Chrysler. He attended Abundant Life Church in Kokomo.

He is survived by his children Mara Hammond, Sandy McAninch, David G. Hudson, John Ernest (Debbie) Hudson, and Bonita Hudson; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; young uncle Art Hammond; and cousin Amy Jennings Evans.

He was preceded in death by his father Oren Walter Hammond Sr.; mother Mildred (Packard-Hammond) Harley; brother William “Bill” Hammond; sister Mary Lou (Hammond) Deese; and son-in-law John McAninch.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Hasler – Stout Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown, IN 46936. A funeral service celebrating Oren’s life will begin at noon on Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Toph Elkins officiating. Burial will follow in Nevada Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force and the Greentown American Legion Post #317. She was an avid reader and formerly a Girl Scout Troop leader, who made all of the neighborhood children feel welcome. Donna was strong and intelligent; she was stoic and loving. Sabrina Joyce Fisher

In the verdant lands of Logansport, Indiana, under the watchful eyes of the heavens, was born a spirit most vivacious, Sabrina Joyce Fisher, on the twentieth day of February in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and fifty-five. Her journey through this mortal coil did cease in the gentle embrace of Kokomo, Indiana, on the first day of November in the year two thousand and twenty-five.

Sabrina, a soul of boundless generosity and fiery passion, didst traverse the path of life with a spirit as free as the noblest of Shakespeare’s creations. She was a matriarch of loving devotion, leaving behind her cherished progeny: Tonya Correll, Heather Begley, wed to Steve, and Chance Fisher, betrothed to Sasha. Her legacy further blooms in the hearts of her grandchildren—Jerika, Kyla, Ben, Hadleigh, and Oliver—who basked in her boundless love and merriment. Sabrina’s kinship circle was completed by her brother, Eric Sherman, a comrade in arms through the tempests of life.

Yet, ere her departure, she was preceded in the journey to the stars by her noble parents, Nora Christine Correll and Homer Christopher Correll, as well as her brethren Charles Schooley, Charles Leslie Coder, and Randy Sherman, and her sisters Teresa Widener and Victoria Widener, all of whom had taken their rest from this weary world.

In her youth, Sabrina, a maiden of keen intellect and quick wit, did grace the halls of Taylor High School, whence she emerged a graduate, armed with knowledge and ready to conquer the world. Her professional sojourn found her amidst the ranks of Chrysler, where she toiled with dedication until the year of our Lord two thousand and eight, when she embraced the sweet reprieve of retirement.

Sabrina’s zest for life was as boundless as the ocean. She was an angler of great skill, finding peace in the silent dance between the water and her line. Her grandchildren were the apples of her eye, and in their company, she found a joy that was both pure and renewing. A traveler at heart, she traversed lands both near and far, seeking the wonders that lay beyond the horizon. In her leisure, she was an avid gamer, engaging in digital quests and adventures with the mirth of a child at play.

In her abode, the scent of sumptuous feasts would oft linger, for she was a cook of considerable talent, delighting in the creation of gastronomic delights for kith and kin. Her collection of porcine figurines was a testament to her whimsical nature, each piece a story, each story a cherished memory. Music was her companion, a constant melody that accompanied her through the seasons of her life.

Sabrina, a woman of generous heart, passionate soul, and spirited demeanor, now takes her rest, leaving behind a tapestry of memories woven with the golden threads of her love and vivacity. Let us not mourn her departure, but rather celebrate the brilliance of her being, for she hath left an indelible mark upon this world, and her spirit shall dance among us still, in the laughter of her grandchildren, the warmth of her kitchen, and the quietude of a fisher’s hope upon the waters.
