Robert J. Gaddis
It is the sad duty of our family to report that Robert J. Gaddis (“Bob”), late of Indianapolis, Indiana, died at the Robin Run Village for Senior Living on December 27, 2025. Bob was born in Richmond, Indiana, on June 24, 1935, to Harold and Ruth (Shaffer) Gaddis, his loving parents. He is survived by his wife of more than 68 years Carolyn, whom he married while enrolled at Purdue University. He is also survived by his sons Gary (and wife Monica) of University City, Missouri, and Bryan of Indianapolis. Bob also had two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His brother David (Carmel, IN), his brother-in-law Jay Smith (LaGrange, IN), and numerous nieces and nephews and their families also survive him.
Bob grew up with his late sister Lou Ann and brother David in Anderson, Indiana, and was a proud 1953 graduate of Anderson High School. He maintained contact with many of his classmates via reunions his class held over the years. One aspect of surviving to age 90 is to have outlived most of his classmates and friends, but Bob treasured his long-term friendships. He retained memorabilia from those reunions through every address change over the years.
After graduating from Purdue University with an B.S. degree in Industrial Economics in 1957, Bob joined the Continental Steel Corporation, which produced wire products such as nails, concrete reinforcing bars, and wire, all from recycled steel. At Continental, he put his Purdue degree to quick use. He was selected to move from being a foreman on the shop floor to the corporate office in the late 1960s, when he began service to Continental as a Wire Division Financial Analyst. He served in this capacity and with Continental, which became acquired by Penn-Dixie Industries, until 1981.
While working at Continental, he became the President, and later Chairman, of the Kokomo Management Club, where he developed a number of long-lasting personal and occupational friendships. He also was active in helping establish and continue the Soap Box Derby in Kokomo, serving for several years as the Race Director. In 1970 and 1972, after his Race Director duties ended, sons Gary and then Bryan won the Kokomo Soap Box Derby and represented Kokomo at the All-American Soap Box Derby National Finals in Akron, Ohio.
After leaving Continental, Bob became self-employed as a property rehabber and salesman. Most of the properties he and his wife Carolyn acquired and upgraded were in Marion County, so in 2002, they moved from the new home they had previously built in Kokomo, to Speedway.
Bob spent his last few years as a resident of the Robin Run Village for Senior Living, a retirement community in Indianapolis. Before, the home he and Carolyn occupied for two decades was just a block from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Bob was a devoted fan of the 500. He attended his first race in the 1950s with his father, whose press credentials got Bob into the old Pagoda. Until 2022, the only 500s that Bob missed since being a high schooler were two that fell while he had finals at Purdue. The race became the focus of many good times, as for the past two decades, Bob and Carolyn enjoyed welcoming their friends and family to their swimming pool-equipped Speedway home for the race and for the qualifications. Bob also enjoyed following the Colts and the Pacers, as well as Purdue University athletics. His loyalty to Purdue was rewarded when both Bob and Carolyn became members of the Purdue University President’s Council.
Gary, Bryan, and Carolyn would like to thank the staff at Robin Run for providing so much thoughtful care to Bob in his final months. They would also like to thank those of The Care Team Home Health and Hospice group, who provided much comfort to Bob as his health failed, and especially to his special caregiver Danyelle Harris from Servant Home Care, who enjoyed providing care to Bob and who said that he reminded her of her own dear departed grandpa.
Bob was an animal lover and a lover of Purdue University, his alma mater. Any of Bob’s friends or family who might wish to make a memorial contribution to honor him are encouraged to donate IndyHumane, the Humane Society of Indianapolis (www.indyhumane.org) (click on “donate” at the top of the home page) or to the Purdue University President’s Council through the Purdue for Life Foundation (https://www.purdueforlife.org/presidents-council/), where at the upper right on the home page you can direct your donation via the black “Give Now” button.
Visitation for Bob will take place Thu., Jan. 8, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Conkle Funeral Home, Speedway Chapel, 4925 W. 16th St., Speedway, IN. The funeral service will take place Fri., Jan. 9, at 10:30 a.m., also at Conkle Funeral Home, Speedway Chapel.
Jay Meredith Miller
Jay Meredith Miller, 80, Kokomo, passed away on Monday, December 15, 2025, in Kokomo, Indiana. He was born August 7, 1945, in Peru, Indiana, the son of the late Meredith & Phyllis (Summers) Miller.
A graduate of Carroll High School in the Class of 1963, Jay went on to attend Ball State University. His lifelong love of learning and curiosity about the world remained a defining part of his character throughout his life.
Jay’s passion for music began early. He first played the cello before discovering the harp during his time at Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan—a renowned summer program for young artists in music, theater, dance, and visual arts. The harp became a central part of Jay’s life. He shared his talent by performing in his early years in New York City as a soloist and freelance musician at Carnegie Hall, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and Central Park, as well as in Broadway Musicals, rock groups, and for many private engagements.
Upon returning to his home state of Indiana, he became a member of several community orchestras and played for weddings, funerals, and receptions. He was sponsored by the Mississinewa Arts Council where he played for many of the schools in the area, delighting school children with his music and stories of the Harp, as well as encouragement to pursue that which they individually find of interest.
Beyond music, Jay had a deep interest in family genealogy and spent countless hours tracing lineage and preserving family history. He also enjoyed watching the Discovery Channel and exploring new topics—his inquisitive nature led him to continually seek knowledge across a wide range of subjects.
Jay’s life was marked by creativity, curiosity, and a quiet dedication to sharing beauty through music. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
Jay is lovingly remembered by his siblings: Ann Emery; Rex (Dee) Miller; Maria (Steve) Willey; and Kent (Terri) Miller. He also leaves behind 12 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews who will cherish his memory.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Jerry Emery.
There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, January 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at East Union Christian Church, 1711 E. 296th Street, Atlanta, Indiana (the corner of State Road 31 and 296th Street). Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory has been entrusted with cremation.
