Michael A. Mims
Michael A. Mims, 76, of Kokomo, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday morning, June 9, 2026, at Community Howard Regional Health Hospital in Kokomo. He was born March 18, 1950, in Sikeston, Missouri, to Alfred L. and Janotra P. (Stephens) Mims. He married the love of his life Nora “Teet” Jones on April 23, 1973, in Kokomo, and she survives.
Mike retired from Chrysler with 36 years of service. He was a member of the UAW local #1166, the Howard Masonic Lodge F&AM #93 in Kokomo and just earned his 50-year pin. He was also a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and was an avid golfer.
A post from his daughter and granddaughter shares precious thoughts of Dad and Poggie.
Today has been one of the hardest days of my life. We had to say goodbye to our dad. I miss him already! His teddy bear heart and since of humor are just parts of him I will miss, but more than anything, I will miss his unconditional love and his moral compass. He will be loved and missed more than he will ever know. Until I see you again. Tina
My Poggie was a man of many hats—quite literally—but the hat he wore best was that of a family man. To his grandchildren, he was the grandpa with huge hands and an even bigger heart. He loved to tease, could always make us laugh, and never passed up an opportunity for a card game or family board game.
One of my favorites to play with him was Fill or Bust, and true to his nature, he never knew when to quit. He just kept the dice rolling, always believing the next turn might be the lucky one. Looking back, I suppose he taught us something much more important than how to play a game. He taught us not to give up, to enjoy the time spent together, and to keep rolling through life with a smile and a little hope.
He was deeply loved, will be dearly missed, and his laughter, stories, and playful spirit will live on in all of us who were lucky enough to know him. Emily
Mike was a vital piece of the Mims family puzzle, forever cherished and deeply missed by everyone whose lives he touched.
Mike’s family would like to add a special request. Please wear golf or casual attire to visitation and his funeral to remember his love of golf.
Surviving family include his wife Nora “Teet” of Kokomo and his children Tami Lytle (Tom Barton), Missy (Dennis) Jackson, Tina (Jerry) Hurlock and Michael (Melody) Mims II. His grandchildren include Katelyn (Austin) Allen, Emily (Ricky) Spencer, Dustin (Brooke) Lytle, Kayla (Bojack) Dowdy, Lyndsi “Loulou” Jackson, Alex (Ashley) Mims, Skylar (Maranda) Bagwell, Kaly Griggs, Ramsie (Jason) Smith, and his grand-dog Jedi. He is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, his sister Mary (Odell) Gaddis, and special friends Gary Allen, Gary “Superman” Roberts, and Pat Cooper. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Ruth (Mims) Brankle, and brothers Arnold and Frank Mims.

Jim moved to Kokomo in 1959, serving as the Director of the Kokomo and Howard County Planning Commissions and the Urban Renewal Commission. He went to work for Youth for Christ International in Wheaton, Illinois, from 1962-1964. In 1964, he entered private practice, eventually becoming the senior partner of the Butcher, Ball, Lowry, McMahan & McClelland Law Firm, where he practiced law for 60 years. A principled statesman, Jim served two four-year terms in the Indiana State Senate (District 21) from 1978 to 1986. During his tenure, he chaired the Economic Development & Evaluation Committee, the Sunset Committee, and the Senate Ethics Committee. He considered his sponsorship and passage of the Baby Doe Bill, requiring maximal medical care for infants with disabilities, one of his crowning achievements. In 1986, he ran as a candidate for the U.S. Congress, and in 1988, he was one of 10 individuals considered for an appointment to the U.S. Senate.
His leadership earned him national and local accolades, including the Sagamore of the Wabash award, presented by Governor Robert D. Jim had a passion for youth, ministry, and civic life, serving as a co-founder and first president of the Kokomo Area Youth for Christ, the Kokomo Christian Businessmen’s Committee, and the Kokomo Connie Mack Baseball Association. He was a member emeritus of the Board of Directors for the Kokomo Rescue Mission, served on the board of the Six County Child Evangelism Fellowship, and was the first President of the Indiana Family Institute. He was also the author of the book No Regrets.
In his leisure time, Jim was an avid sports enthusiast and an enthusiastic collector of Civil War and Abraham Lincoln memorabilia. He was well-known throughout central Indiana for his vivid, full-costume historical impersonations of President Abraham Lincoln for schools, civic groups, and church organizations.
He is survived by his three children Kevin (Carla) Butcher, Linda (Norm) Long, and Jeffrey (Paula) Butcher. Jim also leaves behind a rich heritage of seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marvel and his parents James Otis and Beulah Butcher.
